How these numbers are made
  • Individual bills are confidential in California, so we calculate yours from public rates and what you tell us.
  • Water (Golden State Water, West Orange County system, schedule R3-1-R effective Jan 1, 2026): $36.76 a month service charge for a 5/8 x 3/4-inch meter; quantity rates $4.921 (first 12 Ccf), $5.659 (next 32 Ccf), $6.508 (over 44 Ccf) plus the $0.147 per Ccf surcharge and the $0.0060 per Ccf surcharge effective April 3, 2026. Other temporary surcharges are not added. The 9 Ccf default is a typical-use assumption, not a utility figure.
  • Sewer: OC San's $397 regional fee for a single family residence (2026-27) is on the property tax bill. The City of Stanton maintains the local sewer mains; we did not find a published city sewer charge for single-family homes, so none is counted.
  • Trash: the City of Stanton rate schedule (Exhibit A, effective September 1, 2025) lists a 90 Gallon Container at $27.09 in its Current column and $27.97 in its Proposed column; we use $27.09 and do not count the proposed figure.
  • Property tax: Orange County 2026-27 rate book, tax rate area 17-001 (Garden Grove USD, North Orange County CCD, MWDOC), 1.10161% in total, less the $7,000 homeowners' exemption. Other Stanton rate areas (17-002 to 17-021) differ; we did not count homes per area. Prop 13 assessed values are often below the Census market median used as the starting value. Other county direct charges on the tax bill (e.g. vector control) were not itemised and are not counted.
  • Electricity: SCE with its generation rate (SCE/OCPA comparison, June 1, 2026) plus the $24.15 base services charge; gas: SoCalGas August 2026 typical bill at 35 therms.
  • Nothing here is legal, tax or insurance advice.

Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.

Questions to ask your candidates

Each one starts from a number above. Any candidate can answer them.

1. Trash

The fact: Trash pickup here costs about $325 a year for the standard cart, lower than 244 of the other 267 California cities we cover. Where trash is billed through the tax bill or a separate hauler, it is not counted here.

Ask: "Trash pickup here costs about $325 a year for the standard cart, lower than 244 of the other 267 California cities we cover. What drives that cost, and would you change anything about the service or the price?"
