How these numbers are made
- Garbage: RecycleSmart's Danville single-family rates effective March 1, 2026 (rate year 12), per month: $40.67 for a 20-gallon landfill cart, $45.08 for the standard 32-gallon cart, $76.68 for 64 gallons and $113.84 for 96 gallons, each including weekly recycling and organics collection. Republic Services bills them quarterly (three months at a time). Hard-to-serve rates are higher and not shown.
- Water: EBMUD Schedule A from July 1, 2026, monthly-billing column: $28.60 service charge for a 5/8 or 3/4 inch meter and $8.40, $9.74 and $11.49 per unit (to 7, to 16 and above 16 units a month), plus the $1.33 Elevation Band 2 surcharge on every unit ($9.73, $11.07, $12.82). EBMUD sets the band by pressure zone; we assume Band 2 because the surcharge covers pumping to places 200 feet or more above sea level and Danville's valley floor is roughly 350 to 500 feet; hillside homes in Band 3 pay $1.51 more per unit than shown. The page starts at 5 units a month, EBMUD's median single-family use. EPA's water-system boundary map puts all of Danville in EBMUD's system (CA0110005).
- Sewer: Central San's $784.00 single-family charge (Ordinance 339, from July 1, 2026), on the tax bill as CCCSD SEWER CHG and counted with the tax bill's flat charges. It was on all 29 Danville single-family bills we sampled; 3 of them were charged $1,132.00, which is the $784.00 single-family charge plus Central San's $348.00 accessory dwelling unit (ADU) charge. There is no sewer charge on the EBMUD bill.
- Property tax: Contra Costa County 2026-27 rates for tax rate area 16002, which holds 7,500 of Danville's 12,008 single-family parcels (use codes 11 and 19, tax rate areas 16xxx) in the county's parcel data. All 29 bills we sampled in 16002, 16005, 16006, 16013 and 16036 had the same 1.0957% rate: 1% countywide tax, 0.0624% San Ramon Valley Unified bonds (2002 and 2012 issues), 0.0152% community college bonds, 0.0163% BART and 0.0018% East Bay Regional Park District, less the $7,000 homeowners' exemption. Flat charges on the sampled bills ($1,248.14 a year with sewer, on bills with the median lighting and landscape amount): Central San sewer $784.00, Danville lighting and landscape assessment (DANVILLE ST LT) $264.02 (the median of the 29 bills we sampled), SRVUSD Measure Q parcel tax $144, county stormwater $30, Measure AA $12, regional trails $5.44, mosquito and vector control $4.74 and emergency medical services $3.94. Across 29 sampled single-family bills the Danville lighting and landscape line was $292.48 on 9, $254.56 on 8, $264.02 on 6, $301.24 on 5 and $226.10 on 1; stormwater was $30 on 26 of 29.
- The starting value is the median 2026 assessed value of single-family parcels (use code 11, single family, and 19, single family detached with common area) with a Danville address in Danville tax rate areas, $1,186,946; under Prop 13 recent buyers have higher assessed values. Homes with a Danville mailing address in unincorporated Alamo, Blackhawk or the Tassajara area are outside the town and not modelled. Some newer subdivisions may carry extra special taxes or assessments we did not find on the sampled bills.
- Electricity: PG&E schedule E-1 for a non-CARE (Income Tier 3) home with MCE Light Green generation, the default for Danville (an MCE member since 2018). Delivery is PG&E's E-1 total bundled rate ($0.32561 Tier 1, $0.40702 Tier 2) minus its $0.12855 generation charge and its ($0.01011) Bundled PCIA; to that we add MCE's April 1, 2026 Light Green E1 generation ($0.12855) and the $0.03720 PCIA and franchise fee from the March 1, 2026 PG&E-MCE comparison: $0.37292 per kWh up to the baseline and $0.45433 above. PG&E's $0.79343 a day base services charge is $24.13 a month. Baseline: territory X (Contra Costa County outside the S and T portions), 9.8 kWh a day for 4 summer months and 9.7 for 8 winter months, about 296 kWh a month. Gas: PG&E G-1 (Oct. 1, 2026) $2.42480 and $2.92792 per therm plus the $0.12103 public purpose surcharge, territory X baseline weighted 7 summer, 3 off-peak and 2 on-peak months (about 30.1 therms a month). We found no town tax on Danville electricity or gas bills, so none is added. Typical use is PG&E's 2024 residential average (EIA, about 500 kWh a month) and California's 2024 residential gas average (EIA, about 32 therms a month). Insurance is the 2022 California average homeowners premium (NAIC via the Insurance Information Institute) until you enter your own.

How Danville compares
A typical Danville house against the 110 California cities we cover, using the same default numbers as the total above.
| Per year | Danville | Median | Where it falls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Property tax rate | 1.10% | 1.13% | lower than 88 of the other 109 California cities we cover |
| Water | $927 | $955 | lower than 62 of the other 109 California cities we cover |
| Trash | $541 | $438 | higher than 80 of the other 101 California cities we cover |
| Electricity and gas | $3,705 | $3,556 | higher than 77 of the other 109 California cities we cover |
| Home insurance | $1,492 | $1,492 | in the middle of 108 other California cities we cover |
| Total | $20,842 | $15,240 | higher than 94 of the other 109 California cities we cover |
Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.
Questions to ask your candidates
Each one starts from a number above. Any candidate can answer them.
1. Property tax rate
The fact: Danville's property tax rate is 1.10%, lower than 88 of the other 109 California cities we cover. The rate adds up every agency on the bill, not only the city.
Ask: "Property tax in Danville is 1.10%, lower than 88 of the other 109 California cities we cover. What should that money pay for first, and would you change anything about how it is set?"
2. Trash
The fact: Trash pickup here costs about $541 a year for the standard cart, higher than 80 of the other 101 California cities we cover. Where trash is billed through the tax bill or a separate hauler, it is not counted here.
Ask: "Trash pickup here costs about $541 a year for the standard cart, higher than 80 of the other 101 California cities we cover. What drives that cost, and would you change anything about the service or the price?"
