How these numbers are made
- Individual bills are not public, so we calculate yours from public rates and what you tell us.
- Garbage (Waste Management, 2026 rates the City Council approved on November 19, 2025): $31.92 a month for standard weekly service with the 32-gallon landfill cart and $36.14 with a 64- or 96-gallon cart; recycling and organics carts are part of standard service.
- Water (City of Oceanside, single-family rates effective January 2026, billed monthly): $26.84 a month in fixed charges for a 5/8- or 3/4-inch meter ($21.69 water service + $0.60 MWD Ready to Serve + $4.55 SDCWA Infrastructure), then $7.69 a unit for the first 13 units and $8.47 above that, each including the $4.35 SDCWA surcharge and $0.31 Watershed Protection charge per unit. We start at 11 units a month, the 'medium' single-family use in the City's 2025 rate study. Some homes on the city's eastern and northern edges are served by Vista Irrigation District or Rainbow Municipal Water District instead, which we have not added.
- Sewer: a flat $65.65 a month, the $21.11 residential service fee + $7.89 customer charge + the $36.65 flow charge for a Winter Quarter Average of 6.01 to 7 units. The City sets the flow charge once a year (each July) from your Winter Quarter Average, 95% of your average monthly January-March water use, in brackets from $20.95 (up to 4 units) to $62.83 (over 11 units); it does not change with the water use you enter. The City's rate study ties 4 units to a two-resident home and 12 units to six residents, so 6.01 to 7 units is about a three-person home; the sewer note lists every bracket. The City Waste fee is $5.47 a month on public streets ($5.15 on private streets).
- Property tax: 1.11741% of assessed value (tax rate area 07000, fiscal year 2025-26; the 2026-27 rate book is not out yet): 1% general levy, 0.09901% Oceanside Unified bonds, 0.01140% MiraCosta College bonds and 0.007% Metropolitan Water District, less the $7,000 homeowners' exemption. About a third of single-family parcels, in the east of the city, are in Vista Unified tax rate areas at 1.12952%; the rest are in other school districts' tax rate areas at 1.04574% to 1.12189%. Fixed charges: the $13.08 county vector control assessment (2026-27) and the $15.80 Oceanside Lighting District assessment on a single-family home (FY 2026-27 proceedings, unchanged since 1991). Not included because they vary by parcel or neighborhood: landscape maintenance district assessments (Douglas Park, Del Oro Hills and others), community facilities district special taxes in newer neighborhoods, MWD water standby and County Water Authority availability charges, and the county vector service charge. The starting value is the Census median market value; under Prop 13 your assessed value is likely lower if you bought years ago.
- Electricity: Clean Energy Alliance's published comparison for a typical TOU-DR1 customer, $172.56 a month at 346 kWh on Clean Impact Plus, the default for Oceanside (rates as of August 1, 2026, from 12 months of billing history, so seasons and time-of-use periods are averaged). We split it into SDG&E's $0.79343 a day Base Services Charge averaged over the year ($24.13 a month) and $0.42898 per kWh for the rest ((172.56 - 24.13) / 346). Gas: SDG&E's $0.13 a day fixed charge (CPUC table, September 2025) averaged over the year ($3.95 a month), plus $2.5469 a therm, so that 24 therms a month gives SDG&E's March 2026 average non-CARE bill of $65.08. Insurance starts at the 2022 California average premium, $1,492.
- Sewer default: we use the 6.01-7 unit Winter Quarter Average bracket ($21.11 + $7.89 + $36.65 = $65.65 a month). The City's rate study ties 4 units to a single-family home with two residents and 12 units to one with six (about 2 units a person), so by our estimate 6-7 units is roughly a three-person home.

| Total | $16,040 | $15,240 | higher than 62 of the other 109 California cities we cover |
Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.
