How these numbers are made
  • Property tax: 1% plus the 2026-27 Monterey County debt service rates for Hartnell Community College (0.042623%), Greenfield Union School District (0.092153%) and South Monterey County Joint Union High School (0.084237%). Greenfield has no city bond rate in that table. The tax rate area with the most homes was not confirmed and direct charges on the tax bill were not found, so your bill may differ.
  • Water: the City Council's water rates for FY 2026-27 from the rate notice: account charge $24.66 (Resolution 2023-123 schedule) plus the $15.00 5/8-inch meter charge as the monthly fixed charge, and single-family tiers $2.20/$2.72/$5.17 per 1,000 gallons up to 6 and 13 thousand gallons. The notice is a scanned table whose column headings run one year behind the study; the FY 2026-27 column was taken as the fourth value in each row.
  • Sewer: Resolution 2026-72 (adopted July 14, 2026): $36.74 fixed plus $11.81 per 1,000 gallons; the calculator applies the per-1,000-gallon charge to all water used in the month. Resolution 2026-72 does not say whether the variable charge is based on metered use or a winter average, so the sewer line may run high if it is a winter average. The city's utility page notes a disconnect fee and other charges that are not in the monthly total.
  • Garbage: TCDR's 2026-27 schedule approved by the City Council, with the 64-gallon weekly cart as the default.
  • Electricity and gas: the same 3CE E-1 comparison and PG&E G-1 rates used for nearby Monterey County cities; 370 kWh a month is the comparison's typical use. The comparison's $0.45701 per kWh is an all-in rate (its $168.97 bill is that rate times 370 kWh), so no separate fixed charge is added.
  • Nothing here is legal, tax or insurance advice.

Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.
