Ways to pay less

Nothing here applies to every house automatically. These are worth checking:

This exemption lowers the equalized assessed value of your property by $8,000, and may be claimed in addition to the General Homestead Exemption.

How: Apply with the assessor using the Senior Homestead Exemption form.

  • Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze: household income up to $75,000

The freeze requires a maximum household income of $75,000, which includes that of all persons using the property as their principal dwelling place on January 1 of the tax year.

How: Drop the form at the township assessor's or the Will County Supervisor of Assessments office.

  • Seniors 65+: refuse discount

The senior citizen refuse rate is $28.37 per month and applies to residents aged 65 and over.

How: Complete the senior refuse discount form at Village Hall or call (815) 207-4631.

  • Senior Citizen Tax Deferral program

There is also the Senior Citizen Tax Deferral through the Will County Treasurer's Office.

How these numbers are made
  • Property tax uses the Will County 2025 tax master for tax code 0552 (Troy Fire, School District 30-C, High School District 204, Village of Shorewood, Shorewood-Troy library), total 8.0494 per $100 of assessed value. Shorewood spans several tax codes (SD 201-C and HS 111 areas pay different school rates, SSA codes have zero rates); Will County did not publish parcel counts per code.
  • The starting value is the DataUSA 2024 median property value divided by 3 (Illinois assesses at 33 1/3%); the $8,000 general homestead exemption comes off it.
  • Water is $3.88 monthly plus $6.40 + $4.89 = $11.29 per 1,000 gallons (rates adjusted 4/1/26); sewer is $12.55 plus $10.71 per 1,000 gallons; the $10 monthly water and sewer rehabilitation fee is applied. The Village does not publish a typical household use, so the page default applies.
  • Garbage is the Village's $31.37 monthly refuse rate (Waste Management), billed on the monthly utility bill.
  • Electricity is ComEd (January 2026 delivery sheet plus October 2026 supply) and gas is Nicor Rate 1. No Shorewood municipal electric tax was found, so none is added. Home insurance is not included: no official Shorewood or Illinois premium survey was found.
  • Nothing here is legal, tax or insurance advice.
