How these numbers are made
- Property tax uses Madison County's 2025 rates (payable 2026) for tax code 201 (Village of Godfrey, Godfrey Fire, Alton CUSD 11): six bodies, 6.6834 per $100 of EAV; Godfrey Township levies 0.0000. Tax codes 820, 949 and 1027 carry the same total; Fosterburg Fire code 687 is 6.6074.
- Starting value is an estimate: one third of the Census median value ($192,200 / 3), not an assessor figure; the $6,000 general homestead exemption comes off it.
- Water uses Illinois American Water's Central Division tariff (5/8 inch $25.29 a month plus $1.20026 per 100 gallons). Jersey Rural, Brighton and Fosterburg serve other addresses and are not priced; no village franchise fee is listed for Godfrey.
- Sewer uses Illinois American's Collection and Treatment single-unit charge ($33.30 a month; first 1,000 gallons $0, then $1.8978 per 100 gallons for both the next 1,000 and over 2,000 gallons, so there is no separate middle rate for residential); Riders (VBA, QIP) are not added. Water and sewer totals leave out any riders. A pending Illinois American rate case (ICC docket P2026-0127) may raise water and sewer rates from January 2027.
- Electric: Ameren Illinois default supply (price to compare Oct 2026 - May 2027: 10.441 cents first 800 kWh, 8.262 above). Delivery and the $14.51 fixed charge ($8.55 + $5.96) are Ameren Illinois figures reported by CUB for 2026, the same ones used on the Edwardsville page, not read from Ameren's DS-1 tariff sheet (which points to a PBR-R appendix). Priced at the non-summer supply price all year; the Village's electric aggregation may change supply price. Typical kWh = EIA 2024 Ameren Illinois residential average.
- NOT INCLUDED: trash (private hauler prices are not official figures), gas supply cost and heating use (only Ameren's GDS-1 delivery charges are listed, $23.33 plus 48.344 cents per therm; the total has no gas), insurance, and the 5.15% Alton-area tax does not apply to Godfrey.

Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.
