How these numbers are made
- Property tax: Mattoon Township, Mattoon CUSD 2, City of Mattoon (tax code 07002 on the 2024 rate sheet), 2025 rates: county, school, college, city and airport from Coles County's 2025 rate report; township, road district and park district from the county's 2025 tax computation reports. About 7.9 per $100 of EAV. Parts of the city in Lafayette Township (code 06003) pay about 8.02 and no park district.
- Starting value is an estimate of equalized assessed value: one third of the Census median ($97,700 / 3), because Illinois assesses at 33 1/3 percent; the $6,000 general homestead exemption comes off it.
- Water: 2026 residential 5/8 inch inside-city monthly base charge $2.65 plus $4.90 per 100 cubic feet for the first 2,000 cubic feet and $3.95 above. Sewer: $2.25 per bill plus $7.90 per 100 cubic feet of water used.
- Electric and gas: Ameren Illinois, the same rate components as the Charleston page. Coles County's group electric aggregation has no contract, so supply is Ameren's price to compare.
- NOT INCLUDED: garbage (independent disposal companies; the city lists no rate), insurance.
