Ways to pay less

Nothing here applies to every house automatically. These are worth checking:

  • Seniors 65+: senior homestead exemption

Persons 65 or older who live in the home and are liable for the property taxes are eligible for a homestead exemption which reduces the equalized assessed value of their home by $5,000.

How: Apply with the Kendall County Assessment Office.

  • Seniors 65+ with household income up to $65,000: assessment freeze

Qualified seniors must be 65 or older during the taxable year and have a total household income of no more than $65,000.

How: Submit the application every year.

  • Disabled veterans: homestead exemption

This exemption may be up to $70,000 of the assessed value for certain types of housing owned and used by a disabled veteran or his or her unmarried surviving spouse.

How: Eligibility is determined by the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs and must be reestablished annually.

How these numbers are made
  • Property tax uses Kendall County's 2025 district rates (payable 2026) for the Oswego village tax code: county, forest preserve, Joliet Junior College 516, Oswego Township, multi-township assessment district, Oswego library, Oswegoland park, Oswego fire protection district, Village of Oswego and School District 308, total 7.4512 per $100 of equalized assessed value. The county publishes rates per district; the exact combination was not confirmed against the 2025 tax-code report, and parcels in other codes (Kane or Will County parts, special service areas) differ.
  • The starting value is one third of the Census median market value ($344,500 / 3), because Illinois taxes equalized assessed value (about one third of market value). The $6,000 general homestead exemption comes off that value.
  • Water is the regular rate per 1,000 gallons; the 15,000-gallon tier is taken as per two-month bill (7,500 per month) and the meter charge of $10.35 per two months is halved. Sewer is the Village's $1.92 plus Fox Metro's separate $8.26 (Fox Metro bills it on its own bill) per 1,000 gallons of water used, both on water use. Garbage is $54.72 per two months halved.
  • Electricity is the ComEd delivery sheet plus the Price to Compare and the 1.69 cents per kWh Renewable Energy Adjustment, plus the Village's 0.366 cents per kWh electric tax; gas is Nicor Rate 1 with the Village's 3% gas utility tax applied. Gas use tax and special service area charges are not included.
  • Insurance is not included: no official Oswego or Illinois premium survey was found.
  • Nothing here is legal, tax or insurance advice.

Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.
