How these numbers are made
- Property tax uses the Will County 2025 tax master for tax code 1509 (New Lenox School District 122, Lincoln-Way High School District 210, Village of New Lenox, New Lenox fire, park and library), total 7.8796 per $100 of assessed value. New Lenox has 9 village tax codes (for example District 81 or District 204 areas pay different school rates); 1509 was chosen as the most common pairing and parcel counts per code were not published.
- The starting value is the DataUSA 2024 median property value of $399,900 divided by 3, because Illinois taxes assessed value at about one third of market value. The $8,000 general homestead exemption comes off that value.
- Water is the Village's May 1, 2026 per-1,000-gallon tiers (0-8,000, 9,000-19,000, 20,000+) plus the $40.26 water line charge; sewer is $15.01 per 1,000 gallons plus $25.00 monthly. Garbage is billed quarterly by Homewood Disposal; yard waste cart ($234 a year) is optional and not included.
- Electricity is the ComEd January 2026 delivery sheet plus the October 2026 Price to Compare and Renewable Energy Adjustment; gas is Nicor Rate 1 with the October 2026 gas cost. No Village of New Lenox electric or gas utility tax was found in any official source, so none is added.
- Home insurance is not included: no official New Lenox or Illinois premium survey was found.
- Nothing here is legal, tax or insurance advice.

How New Lenox compares
A typical New Lenox house against the 132 Illinois cities we cover, using the same default numbers as the total above.
| Per year | New Lenox | Median | Where it falls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Property tax rate | 7.88% | 8.23% | lower than 76 of the other 131 Illinois cities we cover |
| Water | $1,109 | $872 | higher than 96 of the other 131 Illinois cities we cover |
| Sewer and utility-bill fees | $1,513 | $535 | higher than 122 of the other 123 Illinois cities we cover |
| Trash | $321 | $283 | higher than 88 of the other 127 Illinois cities we cover |
| Electricity and gas | $1,932 | $2,163 | lower than 92 of the other 131 Illinois cities we cover |
| Total | $14,747 | $11,701 | higher than 111 of the other 131 Illinois cities we cover |
Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.
