Ways to pay less

Nothing here applies to every house automatically. These are worth checking:

  • Seniors 65+: senior homestead exemption

The reduction in equalized assessed value is $8,000 in Cook County and counties contiguous to Cook County or $5,000 in all other counties.

  • Seniors 65+ with household income of $75,000 or less: assessment freeze

The freeze is open to people at least 65 with household income of $75,000 or less for taxable year 2026 (payable in 2027).

How: File Form PTAX-340 each year with the Chief County Assessment Office.

  • Extra trash: city stickers

Customers may purchase additional $1.50 garbage stickers for extra bag/can or $20.00 large item stickers for couches, mattresses, white goods etc.

How these numbers are made
  • Property tax: 2025 final rates from the McDonough County tax computation report for the districts that cover most Macomb homes: county (corporate + special use funds), Macomb City Township (corporate + special use), Macomb Unit School District 185, Spoon River College 534, City of Macomb (corporate + special use), Macomb Park District, Macomb Special Use Library District and Macomb Airport Authority. About 11.4 per $100 of EAV.
  • Starting value is an estimate of equalized assessed value: one third of the Census-style median property value ($103,300 / 3) because Illinois assesses at 33 1/3 percent; the $6,000 general homestead exemption comes off it. No assessor median was found.
  • Water: $6.60 per 100 cubic feet plus the $15.00 monthly water debt service charge. Sewer: $5.50 per 100 cubic feet plus the $6.00 monthly sewer debt service charge. The $5.75 water and $3.64 sewer minimum bills (up to 120 cubic feet) are lower than the flat charges and are not added. Meter maintenance fees vary by meter size and the city publishes no 5/8 inch figure, so none is included.
  • Garbage: the $23.50 monthly flat fee, billed on the water bill. Electric and gas: Ameren Illinois, same rate components as the Mattoon page; Macomb has no municipal electric aggregation program on the state list.
  • NOT INCLUDED: meter maintenance fee, any McDonough Power Cooperative service on the city edge.
  • Insurance: the figure is the 2022 statewide III/NAIC average ($1,343), the newest on the III page. NAIC published a 2023-data report in 2026; secondary sites quote its Illinois HO-3 average as $1,480, but the NAIC PDF table could not be read here, so it is not used.
  • Nothing here is legal, tax or insurance advice.

Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.
