How these numbers are made
  • Property tax uses DuPage County 2025 final rates for tax code 9064, the code the county booklet names Darien (Downers Grove Township, Darien Park District, Tri-State Fire District, Grade School District 61, High School District 86; total 6.1498 per $100 of equalized assessed value). Other codes and a Will County portion exist.
  • The starting value is one third of the Census median market value ($398,700 / 3) because Illinois taxes equalized assessed value, about one third of market value. The $8,000 general homestead exemption comes off that value.
  • Water: $10.50 per 1,000 gallons plus the $15.00 fixed charge per bimonthly bill ($7.50 a month). Sewer: DuPage County charge $4.33 per 1,000 gallons plus its $8.13 base charge per bimonthly bill ($4.065 a month).
  • Trash: LRS rate effective April 1, 2026 ($23.14 a month for unlimited weekly refuse in a 65 or 95 gallon cart, recycling and yard waste included).
  • Electricity: ComEd single-family without electric space heat (delivery from the January 2026 sheet, supply and transmission at the October 2026 Price to Compare). Gas: Nicor Rate 1 customer charge and distribution plus the October 2026 gas cost, both with the city's 5% utility tax on gas bills. Electric also includes Darien's electric utility tax (City Code 3-4-9-2), 0.61 cents per kWh (0.0061 a kWh) for the first 2,000 kWh a month; the table prints 0.61 with lower tiers 0.40 and 0.36, read as cents, and a typical home stays within the first tier.
  • The ordinance table prints $0.61 for the first 2,000 kWh with lower tiers 0.40 and 0.36; Illinois law (65 ILCS 5/8-11-2) sets the tiers at 0.61, 0.40 and 0.36 cents per kWh, so the tax is modeled as 0.61 cents (0.0061 per kWh).

Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.

Questions to ask your candidates

Each one starts from a number above. Any candidate can answer them.

1. Property tax rate

The fact: Darien's property tax rate is 6.15%, lower than 124 of the other 131 Illinois cities we cover. The rate adds up every agency on the bill, not only the city.

2. Electricity and gas

The fact: Electricity and gas for a typical house here cost about $1,876 a year, lower than 104 of the other 131 Illinois cities we cover. Rates are set mostly by the utility and the state.
