How these numbers are made
  • Property tax: Will County 2025 tax master rates for tax code 1139 (Lockport Township, Valley View 365-U, Village of Romeoville), the code the Village itself uses in its tax-dollar breakdown; total 9.9352 per $100 of equalized assessed value. Other codes (Plainfield 202, Lockport 88-A or 205, Du Page Township) differ.
  • The starting value is the 2024 median property value ($257,100, from Data USA); no assessor median was found. Illinois taxes equalized assessed value at about one third of market value, so each Will County rate is divided by 3 and the $8,000 assessed-value homestead exemption is entered as $24,000 of market value ($8,000 x 3).
  • Water: $9.03 per 1,000 gallons x 0.748 gallons-per-ccf factor = $6.754 per ccf, plus the $2.50 monthly lake water fee for a 5/8 inch meter. Sewer: $12.11 per 1,000 gallons x 0.748 = $9.058 per ccf. The Village rates page lists no sewer base charge, so none is used.
  • Garbage: $31.50 plus the $2.00 administration fee per month. Electricity (ComEd price to compare, October 2026 through May 2027, is 10.103 cents; the Village lists ComEd and Nicor as helpful agencies, and a service-area page naming Romeoville was not found): ComEd customer charge $15.50 plus $3.87 standard metering; per kWh delivery 0.06333 + 0.00128 plus the 10.103 cent price to compare.
  • Gas is not included: no official page was found that names Romeoville in the Nicor Gas service area (Nicor Rate 1 is $21.30 a month plus 24.44 cents a therm plus about 33 cents gas supply). Not included: homeowners insurance (no official survey found), municipal utility taxes on electric and gas bills, ComEd and Nicor riders and taxes, and tax-bill special service areas, if any.
  • Nothing here is legal, tax or insurance advice.

Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.

Each one starts from a number above. Any candidate can answer them.

1. Property tax rate

The fact: Romeoville's property tax rate is 3.31%, lower than 131 of the other 131 Illinois cities we cover. The rate adds up every agency on the bill, not only the city.
