How these numbers are made
- Property tax: 2025 rates payable 2026 from the Kane County clerk, summed for the Aurora city, Kane County, forest preserve, Aurora Township, road district, library, Fox Valley Park District, Waubonsee College and West Aurora School District 129 tax districts. East Aurora (131) and Indian Prairie (204) parts of the city differ.
- Value is the average EAV per parcel in Aurora Township (all property types), not a single-family median.
- Water and sewer: $7.70 per CCF combined; the flat fees are listed without a billing period and treated as per bi-monthly bill (halved).
- Electric: ComEd delivery charges since April 2026 bills, October 2026 price to compare and municipal tax. Gas: Nicor Rate 1 distribution plus October 2026 gas charge plus 5.00 cents municipal tax.
- Electric typical use is 583 kWh a month, ComEd's 2024 residential sales divided by customers (EIA), a system-wide average, not an Aurora figure.
- Garbage prices are from the city's trash page as checked 2026-10-30; the page may predate later rate changes.
- Parts of Aurora also lie in DuPage, Will and Kendall counties, which have different tax rates; this page uses the Kane County portion in West Aurora School District 129 and the township average value, which includes commercial and industrial parcels, so it may differ from a single-family home.
- Nothing here is legal, tax or insurance advice.
How Aurora compares
A typical Aurora house against the 132 Illinois cities we cover, using the same default numbers as the total above.
| Per year | Aurora | Median | Where it falls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Property tax rate | 7.43% | 8.23% | lower than 94 of the other 131 Illinois cities we cover |
| Water | $958 | $872 | higher than 81 of the other 131 Illinois cities we cover |
| Sewer and utility-bill fees | $131 | $535 | lower than 111 of the other 123 Illinois cities we cover |
| Trash | $199 | $283 | lower than 108 of the other 127 Illinois cities we cover |
| Electricity and gas | $1,923 | $2,163 | lower than 98 of the other 131 Illinois cities we cover |
| Total | $10,233 | $11,701 | lower than 89 of the other 131 Illinois cities we cover |
Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.
