How these numbers are made
- Property tax uses Cook County's 2025 rates (percent per $100 of equalized assessed value) for Palatine Township with Community Consolidated School District 15, High School District 211, Harper College, the Palatine Park District and Library; the sum is 8.73, near the Clerk's 8.7467 average for the village. Parts of Palatine lie in Districts 54 or 214, Schaumburg or Wheeling township or other park districts and pay different rates; special service areas are not included.
- The starting value is the Assessor's $431,000 median estimate x 10% x the 3.0300 state factor = $130,593, minus the $10,000 homeowner exemption.
- Water 2026: $8.25 monthly basic user charge plus $6.45 per thousand gallons up to 74,810 gallons and $8.30 above; sewer 2026: $8.25 basic user charge plus $1.65 per thousand gallons. Both pages list the basic charge separately, so both are counted. The $3.85 monthly stormwater management fee is included; the Fair Meadows drainage surcharge ($1.61) applies only to that facility's lots.
- Garbage uses the $21.00 monthly curbside pickup charge in the Village's CY 2026 fee schedule (Ordinance O-37-26, effective April 13, 2026). The refuse basic user charge is not added on top of the water one.
- Electricity is ComEd's 2026 delivery rates plus the non-summer supply price to compare plus the Village's Municipal Electric Use Tax at 0.61 cents per kWh (first 2,000 kWh a month; typical use falls in that tier); summer supply is higher. Gas is Nicor Rate 1 plus the October 2026 supply cost; the Village's Taxes & Fees and Tax Rates pages list no municipal gas tax, so none is added. Not included: homeowners insurance (no official premium survey found). Water and sewer bill with a 3,500 gallon minimum usage.

How Palatine compares
A typical Palatine house against the 132 Illinois cities we cover, using the same default numbers as the total above.
| Per year | Palatine | Median | Where it falls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Property tax rate | 8.73% | 8.23% | higher than 83 of the other 131 Illinois cities we cover |
| Water | $620 | $872 | lower than 108 of the other 131 Illinois cities we cover |
| Sewer and utility-bill fees | $278 | $535 | lower than 90 of the other 123 Illinois cities we cover |
| Trash | $252 | $283 | lower than 83 of the other 127 Illinois cities we cover |
| Electricity and gas | $2,046 | $2,163 | lower than 77 of the other 131 Illinois cities we cover |
| Total | $13,721 | $11,701 | higher than 101 of the other 131 Illinois cities we cover |
Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.
