How these numbers are made
- Property tax uses Kendall County's 2025 district rates (payable 2026): county, forest preserve, Community College 516, Fox Township, Plano library, Little Rock-Fox fire protection district, City of Plano and Plano CUSD 88, total 7.6489 per $100 of equalized assessed value. The exact tax-code combination for Plano was not confirmed against the county's code-by-code report; road district, multi-township and special service area rates are not included.
- The starting value is one third of the Census median market value ($230,700 / 3), because Illinois taxes equalized assessed value (about one third of market value). The $6,000 general homestead exemption comes off that value.
- Water: the City charges $22.25 per two months for the first 2,000 gallons and $5.90 per 1,000 gallons beyond; modeled as $11.125 a month including the first 1,000 gallons a month. Sewer: $29.02 per two months for the first 2,000 gallons and $6.08 per 1,000 gallons beyond, modeled the same way. Garbage is $50.50 per two months halved.
- Electricity is the ComEd delivery sheet plus the Price to Compare and the 1.69 cents per kWh Renewable Energy Adjustment, plus the 0.628 cents per kWh Plano municipal tax addition for the first 2,000 kWh; gas is Nicor Rate 1 with the 5.15% Plano additional charge applied.
- Insurance is not included: no official Plano or Illinois premium survey was found.
- Nothing here is legal, tax or insurance advice.

How Plano compares
A typical Plano house against the 132 Illinois cities we cover, using the same default numbers as the total above.
| Per year | Plano | Median | Where it falls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Property tax rate | 7.65% | 8.23% | lower than 84 of the other 131 Illinois cities we cover |
| Water | $539 | $872 | lower than 117 of the other 131 Illinois cities we cover |
| Sewer and utility-bill fees | $592 | $535 | higher than 71 of the other 123 Illinois cities we cover |
| Trash | $303 | $283 | higher than 76 of the other 127 Illinois cities we cover |
| Electricity and gas | $2,002 | $2,163 | lower than 79 of the other 131 Illinois cities we cover |
| Total | $8,859 | $11,701 | lower than 112 of the other 131 Illinois cities we cover |
Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.
