How these numbers are made
  • Property tax uses Dane County's 2025 tax-year mill rates for the Village of Windsor (Group A, the largest group of parcels): village 3.478709, county 2.714151, MATC 0.582735 and DeForest school 8.744372 less the 1.536188 state school credit, per $1,000 (total 13.983779 per $1,000 of assessed value). The page applies the table's full-value rate of 13.59496 (that total divided by the 1.0286 ratio) as one combined rate, since the starting value is a market figure.
  • The starting value is the Census median value of owner-occupied homes in Windsor village (ACS 2024 5-year), a market figure, so the table's full-value rate is used; assessed values may differ. Some parcels are in the Sun Prairie School District or a lake district and pay different rates.
  • Trash and recycling is a $213.98 yearly special charge per unit on the tax bill for 2026 service, shown as a monthly equivalent and not counted again in property tax.
  • Water and sewer are Windsor Utilities' rates effective 3/21/2024 as posted on the Village's bill insert: water $14.50 plus $14.00 public fire protection, sewer $15.22, with a typical house using the water volume tiers and sewer volume per 1,000 gallons. Windsor Utilities serves about 2,000 customers in and around Windsor and DeForest, so houses on private wells or septic systems pay no water or sewer bill.
  • Electric is Alliant Rg-1 ($0.5260 a day and $0.17011 per kWh at 645 kWh a month, the EIA Wisconsin average). Gas is MGE at 60 therms a month, with the per-therm price averaging the monthly supply charge over a year. No insurance premium is included.
  • Nothing here is legal, tax or insurance advice.

How Windsor compares

A typical Windsor house against the 47 Wisconsin cities we cover, using the same default numbers as the total above.

Total$9,577$7,415higher than 41 of the other 46 Wisconsin cities we cover

Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.
