How these numbers are made
  • Property tax uses Dane County's 2025 tax-year rates for the City of Stoughton, Stoughton School District: city 7.360026, county 2.570131, MATC 0.61596 and school 8.192023 less the 1.312932 school credit, per $1,000 (total 17.425208).
  • The starting value is the City's $350,000 estimate for the average single-family home, which the City states as an equalized value. It is run through Dane County's assessed-basis mill rates (city 7.360026), whereas the City's own budget uses 7.1628 per $1,000 of equalized value, so the city part is overstated by about 3% (roughly $70); the real assessed value of a house may also differ.
  • Water is $13.00 customer charge plus $10.00 fire protection and $0.00358 per gallon; sewer is $13.69 plus $0.00671 per gallon; the $7.01 stormwater ERU is on the utility rates page. Typical use is the utility's 4,000 gallons and 600 kWh a month.
  • Trash and recycling is the City's annual refuse collection charge of $215.20 divided by 12; the sources do not say whether it is on the tax bill or the utility bill, so it is counted once.
  • Electric uses RG-1 $14.00 + $1.24 CTC and $0.1140 per kWh, leaving out the variable PCAC. Gas is Alliant's Gg-1: $0.4603 a day (about $14.00 a month) and $0.4907 per therm; use 751 therms a year.
  • Some Stoughton addresses lie in Rock County or other school districts, and no flat special charges beyond the above were found on city sources.
  • Nothing here is legal, tax or insurance advice.

Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.
