How these numbers are made
- Property tax uses the Wisconsin DOR 2025 effective full-value rate of 0.01724 for the City of Marshfield (Wood County part, about 94% of the city's parcels), applied to the Census median home value of $177,800. The rate is on full (equalized) value, so it fits a market value; it is net of the state school levy credit. Homes in the Marathon County part pay a net rate of 0.01645 on full value. Lottery and first dollar credits are not subtracted.
- Water: $10.00 customer charge plus $7.76 residential public fire protection charge for a 5/8-inch meter, per month, plus $5.24 per 100 cu. ft. for the first 16,700 cu. ft. (167 ccf), $4.34 for the next 83,300 cu. ft. and $4.06 above 100,000 cu. ft. Sewer: $18.90 fixed monthly plus $4.26 per 100 cu. ft. of water, effective 1-1-2026. Both are billed monthly by Marshfield Utilities.
- Electric is the Rg-1 customer charge of $13.00 and $0.0907 per kWh. Marshfield Utilities also bills a monthly power cost adjustment (PCAC) that it does not publish in advance, so actual bills run a little above or below this. Typical use of 675 kWh a month is the 2024 EIA residential sales for City of Marshfield divided by its customers and 12 months.
- Natural gas: the retail gas utility for Marshfield homes is not stated in any official text I could open. WPS's gas pooling territory map (wisconsinpublicservice.com/services/pdf/territory-map.pdf) lists 'Marshfield - C' under Wood County and an operating system 'PA108 OS98 Marshfield', but PA108 is colour-coded to the Wisconsin Gas (WG) pool areas in its legend, not WPS, so it does not show that WPS serves Marshfield. Marshfield Utilities sells electric and water only and the PSC lists it as a gas transmission operator only. Gas is therefore left out until the serving utility's tariff for Marshfield is confirmed; this does not mean there is no gas service. Garbage and recycling: the City of Marshfield's 2026 Adopted Budget lists 'Refuse & Garbage' ($622,997) and 'Recycling' ($384,263) as General Fund public works costs, and the 2026 Fee Schedule lists no residential garbage or recycling fee, so the $0 shown is not a charge on a household bill; the cost is carried in the city budget (general fund, which the property tax levy supports). Stormwater: the 2026 city Fee Schedule lists only stormwater permit fees (no residential stormwater utility fee).

How Marshfield compares
A typical Marshfield house against the 47 Wisconsin cities we cover, using the same default numbers as the total above.
| Per year | Marshfield | Median | Where it falls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Property tax rate | 1.72% | 1.54% | higher than 28 of the other 45 Wisconsin cities we cover |
| Water | $779 | $461 | higher than 40 of the other 46 Wisconsin cities we cover |
| Sewer and utility-bill fees | $687 | $687 | in the middle of 46 other Wisconsin cities we cover |
| Electricity and gas | $890 | $1,905 | lower than 46 of the other 46 Wisconsin cities we cover |
| Total | $5,421 | $7,415 | lower than 45 of the other 46 Wisconsin cities we cover |
Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.
