How these numbers are made
  • Property tax uses the Village of McFarland's 2025 rates on Dane County's table: Village 5.775728, Dane County 2.537859, Madison College 0.606761 and McFarland schools 8.998722 less the 1.47994 school credit, per $1,000.
  • The starting value is the Village's 2025 median assessed value of a single-family home, $444,000. The 2025 rates are used because 2026 rates are not yet set.
  • The $162.36 solid waste special assessment (2026 budget) is counted once as the trash cost, $13.53 a month, and not in the tax total; it is billed with the property tax bill. Lottery and first dollar credits are not subtracted.
  • Water and sewer bills are bimonthly; monthly amounts are half of each bimonthly charge. Water is the $34.00 base plus $28.70 public fire protection, $4.18 per 1,000 gallons; sewer is $42.90 base plus $7.15 per 1,000 gallons. Water Step II (about fall 2027) will raise rates again. Usage modelled is the Village's example of 10,000 gallons per two-month bill (5,000 gallons a month); the Village does not call it typical.
  • Stormwater is $120 a year per equivalent residential unit, $10 a month. Electric uses MGE's residential Rg-1 rates (the same tariff as Madison); Alliant Energy also lists McFarland, so some addresses may be served by it. Natural gas is left out: MGE and Alliant both list McFarland, so gas is not priced.
  • Nothing here is legal, tax or insurance advice.
