Ways to pay less

Nothing here applies to every house automatically. These are worth checking:

  • Pay property tax by e-check, not card

Online electronic check carries an additional $1.50 fee; credit card an additional 2.55% of the payment.

How: Pay online on the Village website.

  • Streetlight charge is not in the total: $4.84 per foot of frontage

The 2026 streetlight charge is $4.84 per lineal foot of the street your property is addressed on, billed on the utility bill; for example 40 feet would be $193.60 a year. Corner lots are charged the shortest street length, not less than 40 feet.

How: The Village's Streetlight Charge GIS link shows your lineal footage.

How these numbers are made
  • Property tax uses the 2025 net rate of $18.90 per $1,000 (Milwaukee County table; includes schools, MATC, MMSD, county and state credit) on a $340,000 assessed example home from the Village budget. Wisconsin has no homestead exemption.
  • Water is $4.69 per 1,000 gallons (new August 2026 rate); the quarterly meter charge $36.00 plus public fire protection $28.56 (5/8-inch meter, August 2026 column) is divided by 3 = $21.52 a month. Sewer is $14.26 per 1,000 gallons plus $20.06 a quarter (divided by 3).
  • Refuse is a Village service funded by property tax, with no separate fee. Electric adds the three per-kWh Rg1 charges (0.19342 + 0.00199 + 0.00052) and annualises the $0.49315 daily customer charge.
  • A streetlight special charge ($4.84 per lineal foot in 2026, billed on the quarterly utility bill) is not in the total because the Village publishes no typical frontage; it is shown as a per-foot rate (e.g. 40 feet x $4.84 = $193.60 a year; the 40 feet minimum applies to corner lots).
  • Gas is We Energies (Wisconsin Gas LLC) Rg-1 per the We Energies gas pooling-area map, which places Shorewood in the Metro Milwaukee area with Glendale; fixed $0.33 a day and $0.7083 per therm effective Nov 1, 2026; typical use is 865 therms a year (72.08 a month) from We Energies' rate-request assumption. No sourced village or county insurance premium was found, so insurance is omitted.
