How these numbers are made
  • Property tax uses the Village of Cottage Grove's 2025 net rate of 25.155045 per $1,000 (Village 7.821216, Dane County 3.975531, MATC 0.853588 and Monona Grove schools 14.454280 less the 1.94957 school credit) on the Dane County table, applied to the Village's $315,000 average assessed home. That gives about $7,924, matching the Village's own 2025 figure before credits.
  • 2026 rates are not out yet and the 2026 revaluation will raise assessed values and lower the rate; the 2025 pair of rate and assessed value is used together so they stay consistent. Lottery and gaming and first dollar credits on the bill are not subtracted.
  • Trash and recycling are on the property tax bill: the Village's 2025 sample bill shows a $125.40 trash charge and $59.88 recycling charge ($185.28 a year, $15.44 a month), counted once and not in the tax rate.
  • Water adds the $11.60 service charge and $16.50 public fire protection charge for a 5/8 or 3/4 inch meter, with tiers per 1,000 gallons at 4,000 and 8,000 gallons a month, as on the Village rates page. The Village is pursuing a water rate case with an expected increase of about 27.7% in late 2026 or 2027; it is not yet in effect.
  • Sewer is $19.84 plus $9.45 per 1,000 gallons, the 2026 rates in the Village's 2026 sewer rate study.
  • Electric and gas use Alliant's Wisconsin Power and Light residential rates effective 1/1/2026; typical electric use is the 2024 EIA average per Wisconsin Power & Light customer and typical gas use is Alliant's 751 therms a year. Gas supply varies monthly.
