How these numbers are made
- Property tax is Columbia County's published 2025 net mill rate of 0.017624322 for the City of Columbus in the Columbus School District, applied to the Census median home value.
- Water: $15.02 service charge plus $14.07 public fire protection for a 5/8-inch meter, monthly, with volume tiers per 100 cubic feet (1,250 and 12,500 cubic feet monthly breakpoints).
- Trash and recycling is a yearly special charge on the tax bill: the 2026 charge is $211.00 ($6.00 above 2025), used here as the current charge.
- Electric: $9.00 plus $0.1192 plus the $0.0014 projected 2026 power cost adjustment; the May 2026 utility commission packet still lists the rates effective 2/29/24. Typical use is the EIA Wisconsin average, 645 kWh. Natural gas is not modeled: no official source naming the gas provider was found.
- Sewer (2026): $7.56 per 100 cubic feet (up from $6.35) plus a $26.68 monthly fixed meter charge for a 3/4-inch meter, from the 2026 sewer rate study (Ruekert-Mielke, 5/2026): its sample bill at 3/4-inch and 4 ccf is $52.08 at current rates, which is 4 x $6.35 + $26.68, and its quarterly table shows $80.04 (3 x $26.68). The study says the next fixed-charge increase is in 2028.
- Water rates are the 2025 schedule; the utility website could not be reached for a 2026 schedule. Property tax uses the 2025 roll; sewer, trash and electric are 2026 figures.
- Trash charge is described in committee minutes as a garbage/recycling fee assessment; sewer fixed charge is the official 2026 Sewer Rate Information sheet; 2026 packet sample bill cross-checks 4x6.35+26.68=52.08.
