Ways to pay less
Nothing here applies to every house automatically. These are worth checking:
Seniors 65+ with limited income: extra exemptionsExtra exemption on county and city taxes
Seniors 65 or older with a homestead exemption and 2026 household adjusted gross income of no more than $38,686 can get the low-income senior exemption, which applies to the county portion of the taxes and to city taxes in cities that adopted it. Broward County raised its amount to $50,000, and Oakland Park is listed among the cities that enacted the ordinance increasing the senior exemption to $50,000. Oakland Park also enacted the long-term residency senior exemption, which exempts city taxes for seniors who meet the age and income requirements, have lived in the home at least 25 years and whose property had a just value under $250,000 when they first applied.
How: File the sworn income statement with the Broward County Property Appraiser by March 1, 2027 and income documents by June 1, 2027.
Fire assessment exemption for low-income seniors and disabled homeownersNo fire assessment
Oakland Park exempts residential homesteaded properties from the fire assessment when the Broward County Property Appraiser shows them receiving the low-income senior exemption or the total and permanent disability exemption.
How: The exemption goes to homesteaded properties the Broward County Property Appraiser identifies as receiving one of those exemptions.
$5,000 exemptions for widowed, blind and disabled residents$5,000 off taxable value
Broward offers a $5,000 exemption for widowed persons, a $5,000 exemption for blind persons and a $5,000 exemption for totally and permanently disabled residents.
How: Apply to the Broward County Property Appraiser with the documents it lists (death certificate, Division of Blind Services certificate or physician's letter).
Veterans with a service-connected disability: exemptions$5,000 off, or an exemption on the homestead
Veterans with a service-related disability of at least 10% can get a $5,000 exemption; honorably discharged veterans with a service-connected total and permanent disability are entitled to an exemption on their homestead.
How: Apply to the Broward County Property Appraiser with a certificate from the U.S. Government or the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Your water

- The City of Oakland Park utility system buys its water from the City of Fort Lauderdale.
- Fluoride
- Since July 1, 2025 no fluoride is added to the city water supply; small amounts of naturally occurring fluoride may remain in some areas.
Some Oakland Park neighborhoods get water and sewer directly from Broward County (North Andrews Gardens and Lakeside) or from Fort Lauderdale (Twin Lakes South). Homes there pay that utility's rates, not the City of Oakland Park rates in these totals.

How these numbers are made
- Florida tax bills are public, but we calculate yours from public rates and the value you enter.
- Property tax: 20.2258 mills in total for Broward County millage code 1712 (Oakland Park), 2026 final rates; it is the only millage code for the city: Broward County 5.6628; School Board 6.2940 (split into 3.0460 required local effort and 3.2480 discretionary and capital from the Property Appraiser's proposed-millage table) plus 0.1587 school debt; Children's Services Council 0.4500; North Broward Hospital District 1.2391; Florida Inland Navigation District 0.0270; South Florida Water Management District 0.2301; City of Oakland Park 5.6799 operating plus 0.4842 voted debt.
- Homestead takes $25,000 off all taxes and up to $26,411 more off non-school taxes (we apply the full $26,411). The starting value is the Property Appraiser's July 2026 median assessed value of Oakland Park single-family homes ($301,780), which reflects the Save Our Homes cap; the average is $325,160 and the median market value is $437,130.
- Non-ad valorem charges on the November 2026 tax bill: the residential solid waste assessment ($344.00 per dwelling unit, shown as $28.67 a month under garbage) and the stormwater assessment ($145.00 per ERU; each residence is one ERU), both as in the Property Appraiser's final 2026 non-ad valorem recap, and the city's fire assessment. That recap does not list fire assessments, so the fire amount ($441 per residential unit) is the FY 2027 rate recommended in the City Manager's July 15, 2026 budget message; we could not find the final resolution adopted at the September 14, 2026 hearing, and the solid waste and stormwater amounts recommended in the same message match the final recap.
- Water and sewer: City of Oakland Park residential rates effective October 1, 2026, billed monthly: water $16.90 plus $11.55 per thousand gallons to 3,000, $12.46 to 6,000, $14.70 to 12,000 and $16.06 above; sewer $21.40 plus $9.45 per thousand gallons, billed on up to 15,000 gallons. By the EPA water-system map and 2020 Census housing counts nearly all of the city's housing units are inside the City of Oakland Park water system's boundary, but the city says North Andrews Gardens and Lakeside are served by Broward County and Twin Lakes South by Fort Lauderdale; those homes are shown at the City rates. The Florida Department of Revenue's public service tax database lists a water entry for Oakland Park with a rate shown as "10"; the Florida Department of Revenue lists a 10% public service tax on water in Oakland Park, so 10% is added to the water charges (not sewer).
- Electricity: FPL rate RS-1 effective October 2026, $10.52 a month plus 12.258¢ per kWh up to 1,000 kWh and 14.258¢ above (energy, conservation, capacity, environmental, storm protection and fuel charges less the transition credit), plus Oakland Park's 10% public service tax on electricity applied to the whole bill (Florida law exempts the fuel charge, so this slightly overstates it). FPL's franchise fee and gross receipts tax are not included. Typical use, 1,104 kWh a month, is EIA's 2024 Florida residential average. Gas is not modeled: few Oakland Park homes heat with utility gas. Insurance: Florida OIR's Broward County average homeowners premium with wind coverage ($6,136, data as of March 31, 2026); flood insurance is a separate policy and is not included.

Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.
