Ways to pay less

Nothing here applies to every house automatically. These are worth checking:

  • Seniors 65+ with limited income: extra exemptionsExtra exemption on county and city taxes

Broward County raised the Low-Income Senior's Additional Homestead Exemption to $50,000 for the county portion of the tax bill, and Hollywood is on the Property Appraiser's list of cities that have adopted the Senior Citizen's Additional Homestead Exemption. Hollywood also adopted the Long-term Residency Senior Exemption for the city's portion of the bill, for seniors who have lived on the property at least 25 years and whose property had a just value under $250,000 for the initial year of application. For 2027 you must be 65 or older on January 1, 2027, have the homestead exemption, and have 2026 household adjusted gross income not exceeding $38,686.

How: Submit the Adjusted Gross Household Income Sworn Statement to the Broward County Property Appraiser on or before March 1, 2027.

  • Disabled veterans: $5,000 or full homestead exemption$5,000 off, or a full homestead exemption

$5,000 Veteran's Disability Exemption: the disability must be military service-related, incurred during a period of wartime service or by misfortune, and at least 10% before January 1; the veteran must be a permanent resident of the State of Florida, and the surviving spouse of an eligible disabled veteran may also claim it if he or she has not remarried. Full exemption: any honorably discharged veteran with a service-connected total and permanent disability is entitled to an exemption on real estate used and owned as a homestead.

How: For the $5,000 exemption, a copy of your Certificate of Disability from the U.S. Government or the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (or its predecessor agency); for the full exemption, a certificate from the US Government or US Department of Veterans Affairs.

  • Disabled veterans and first responders: no fire rescue assessmentNo $364 fire rescue assessment

Hollywood does not impose its fire rescue assessment on a homestead owned by a veteran honorably discharged with a service-connected total and permanent disability, or by a first responder totally and permanently disabled in the line of duty, when the Property Appraiser has determined the property is exempt from ad valorem taxation. The residential fire rescue assessment is $364 per dwelling unit for the fiscal year beginning October 1, 2026.

How: It applies when the Property Appraiser has determined that the property is exempt from ad valorem taxation.

  • Pay your tax bill in November for 4% off4% off the bill

Broward tax bills paid in full get 4% off in November, 3% in December, 2% in January and 1% in February. Partial payments forfeit the discounts.

How: Pay the Broward County Tax Collector in full in November.

  • Toilet rebate: up to $100 per toiletUp to $100 per toilet

Hollywood water customers who replace a toilet using 1.6 or more gallons per flush with an EPA WaterSense-labeled toilet can get a rebate of up to $100 of its cost, credited to the water bill. One rebate per toilet; the program is first come, first served and subject to available funding.

How: Send the toilet rebate application with the original receipt, a photo of the installed toilet and a copy of your water bill to H2Oprogram@hollywoodfl.org or by mail.

  • Leak or pool fill: ask for a billing adjustmentCredit on the utility bill

Customers on City sewer (not on a septic tank) may be eligible for a sewer billing credit after a swimming pool has been filled or after a leak of over 500 cubic feet (3,740 gallons); only one sewer billing credit is allowed in a 12-month period. Accounts with usage exceeding 150 percent of the average monthly usage for the previous 12 months may be considered for a high water use billing adjustment.

How: Apply within 60 days of receiving the bill showing the high usage. For a leak, give the location of the leak and the date it was repaired, with supporting documentation such as a plumber's invoice, a hardware store receipt or photos.

  • Free recycled exterior paintUp to 10 gallons free

Single-family homeowners may receive up to 10 gallons of recycled exterior latex paint at 1600 S. Park Road, on one Saturday each quarter from 8 a.m. to noon.

How: Bring a valid driver's license and a current utility bill, lease or mortgage documentation as proof of City of Hollywood residency.

Your water

Source
The City of Hollywood gets its drinking water from groundwater wells in the Biscayne and Floridan Aquifers.
Treatment
The City treats Biscayne Aquifer water with lime softening and membrane filtration, and Floridan Aquifer water with reverse osmosis.
TTHM
The 2025 report marks a violation for total trihalomethanes (TTHM): level detected 57.1 ppb, range 11.7 to 185.0 ppb, MCL 80 ppb.
Lead
Lead at the tap (July-August 2024 sampling): 3.5 ppb, below the 15 ppb action level; the service line inventory submitted October 16, 2024 certified the system as non-lead.

Some properties within Hollywood are served by Broward County or the Town of Davie, and in some cases water and sewer come from different providers. Homes there pay that utility's rates, not the City of Hollywood rates in these totals. About 44% of Hollywood is not on City sewer: homes on a septic system pay no City sewer charge, so take about $79 a month ($945 a year at 600 cubic feet) off the totals.

How these numbers are made
  • Florida tax bills are public, but we calculate yours from public rates and the value you enter.
  • Property tax: 20.8399 mills in total for Broward County millage code 0513 (Hollywood - S Hospital), 2026 final rates: Broward County 5.6628; School Board 6.2940 (split into 3.0460 required local effort and 3.2480 discretionary and capital from the Property Appraiser's proposed-millage table) plus 0.1587 school debt; Children's Services Council 0.4500; South Broward Hospital District 0.0805; Florida Inland Navigation District 0.0270; South Florida Water Management District 0.2301; City of Hollywood 7.4293 operating plus 0.5075 debt service. Hollywood parcels in the North Broward Hospital District (code 0512) pay 21.9985 mills instead, and parcels in a safe neighborhood or drainage district carry extra charges not included here.
  • Homestead takes $25,000 off all taxes and up to $26,411 more off non-school taxes (we apply the full $26,411). The starting value is the Property Appraiser's July 2026 median assessed value of Hollywood single-family homes ($324,790), which reflects the Save Our Homes cap; the average is $391,847 and the median market value is $503,845.
  • Non-ad valorem charge on the November 2026 tax bill: the City of Hollywood fire rescue assessment, $364 per residential dwelling unit, as set by the annual rate resolution adopted September 14, 2026. Hollywood's $17 fire inspection assessment applies to multi-family (three or more units) and non-residential property, so it is not included. Garbage ($47.00 a month) and stormwater ($22.00 a month per ERU) are on the City utility bill, not the tax bill.
  • Water and sewer: City of Hollywood single-family rates effective 11/01/2026 (water and sewer rate schedules adopted July 7, 2026). Water $11.68 a month plus $3.74 per CCF up to 500 cubic feet, $7.46 to 1,500 and $14.94 above; sewer $12.00 plus $11.12 per CCF on up to 1,500 cubic feet. The Florida Department of Revenue lists a 10% public service tax on water in Hollywood, so 10% is added to the water charges (not sewer). The page starts at the City's average single-family use of 600 cubic feet a month. By the EPA water-system map and Census block housing counts about 98% of the city's housing units are inside the City of Hollywood water system boundary, but the City says some properties are served by Broward County or the Town of Davie; those homes are shown at City rates. Approximately 44% of the city is unsewered; homes on septic pay no City sewer charge.
  • Electricity: FPL rate RS-1 effective October 2026, $10.52 a month plus 12.258¢ per kWh up to 1,000 kWh and 14.258¢ above (energy, conservation, capacity, environmental, storm protection and fuel charges less the transition credit), plus Hollywood's 10% public service tax on electricity applied to the whole bill (Florida law exempts the fuel charge, so this slightly overstates it). FPL's franchise fee and gross receipts tax are not included. Typical use, 1,104 kWh a month, is EIA's 2024 Florida residential average. Gas is not modeled: few Hollywood homes heat with utility gas. Insurance: Florida OIR's Broward County average homeowners premium with wind coverage ($6,136, data as of March 31, 2026); flood insurance is a separate policy and is not included.

Questions to ask your candidates

Each one starts from a number above. Any candidate can answer them.

1. Property tax rate

The fact: Hollywood's property tax rate is 2.08%, higher than 45 of the other 52 Florida cities we cover. The rate adds up every agency on the bill, not only the city.

2. Sewer and utility-bill fees

The fact: Sewer and flat utility-bill charges here come to about $1,209 a year, higher than 44 of the other 51 Florida cities we cover. Some cities bill sewer on the property tax bill instead, which is not counted here.
