How these numbers are made
- Florida tax bills are public, but we calculate yours from public rates and the value you enter.
- Property tax: 20.4025 mills in total for Broward County millage code 2112 (Sunrise), 2026 final rates: Broward County 5.6628; School Board 6.2940 (split into 3.0460 required local effort and 3.2480 discretionary and capital from the Property Appraiser's proposed-millage table) plus 0.1587 school debt; Children's Services Council 0.4500; North Broward Hospital District 1.2391; Florida Inland Navigation District 0.0270; South Florida Water Management District 0.2301; City of Sunrise 6.0543 operating plus 0.2865 debt. A few parcels sit in community development or improvement districts, which the county's recap of extra tax-bill charges lists separately; we show none for a typical house.
- Homestead takes $25,000 off all taxes and up to $26,411 more off non-school taxes (we apply the full amount, which every home assessed at $76,411 or more gets). The starting value is the Property Appraiser's July 2026 median assessed value of Sunrise single-family homes ($272,830); assessed values sit below market ($443,950 median) because of Save Our Homes.
- Water and sewer: the City of Sunrise inside-city January 2026 rate sheet: water $25.76 a month plus $4.03 per 1,000 gallons to 4,000, $5.56 to 8,000, $6.34 to 12,000, $8.45 to 16,000 and $10.58 above; sewer $28.66 plus $5.08 per 1,000 gallons of water used (12,000 gallons maximum). The city has three water service areas (Sawgrass, Southwest, Springtree); we use Sawgrass. Garbage $22.63 plus recycling $4.38 and stormwater $11.03 are billed monthly on the same bill. The city's older rate sheets (October 2020 and October 2024) list a 10% municipal utility tax on water; we could not re-check that against the January 2026 sheet (the city site blocks automated reads) and the totals do not include it, so the water line is understated by about a tenth. The garbage and recycling amounts are as printed on the January 2026 sheet; we could not cross-check them against a bill.
- Electricity: FPL rate RS-1 effective October 2026, $10.52 a month plus 12.258¢ per kWh up to 1,000 kWh and 14.258¢ above (all per-kWh charges combined); typical use (1,104 kWh a month) is EIA's 2024 Florida statewide residential average, not a Sunrise or Broward figure. FPL franchise fees and any city utility tax on electricity are not included (we found no source for Sunrise), so the electric figure is the FPL rate-sheet charges only and a real bill will be higher. City gas customers (Sunrise Gas, $16.75 a month plus commodity charge per ccf) are not modelled. Insurance is the Florida OIR average Broward County premium including wind.

| Water | $685 | $515 | higher than 37 of the other 52 Florida cities we cover |

| Total | $14,495 | $12,935 | higher than 36 of the other 52 Florida cities we cover |
Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.
Questions to ask your candidates
Each one starts from a number above. Any candidate can answer them.
1. Property tax rate
The fact: Sunrise's property tax rate is 2.04%, higher than 43 of the other 52 Florida cities we cover. The rate adds up every agency on the bill, not only the city.
Ask: "Property tax in Sunrise is 2.04%, higher than 43 of the other 52 Florida cities we cover. What should that money pay for first, and would you change anything about how it is set?"
2. Electricity and gas
The fact: Electricity and gas for a typical house here cost about $1,775 a year, lower than 39 of the other 52 Florida cities we cover. Rates are set mostly by the utility and the state.
Ask: "Electricity and gas here cost about $1,775 a year for a typical house, lower than 39 of the other 52 Florida cities we cover. Which parts of that can the city influence, and what would you do about them?"
