Switch to the 20 gallon, every week cartUp to $35 a year
Your cart costs $23 a month; the smallest costs $21. Worth it if you rarely fill it.
How: Contact Republic Services (651-455-8634) to switch your cart size.
File for homestead
Homestead can reduce the taxable market value of houses valued under $517,200, which may lower taxes, and it is one of the qualifying factors for the State of Minnesota Property Tax Refund.
How: Apply online with Ramsey County; the last day to apply is Dec. 31.
Claim the Minnesota property tax refund
The regular refund is based on household income and the property tax on your home; a special refund applies when your net property tax rose at least 12% and $100.
How: File with the Minnesota Department of Revenue by August 15; you may file up to one year late.
Seniors 65+: defer part of your property tax
With the Senior Citizens Property Tax Deferral, the tax you pay is 3% of household income and the state pays the rest as a loan, repaid with interest when you sell or cancel.
How: You must be 65 or older (if married, the other spouse at least 62) with household income of $96,000 or less; apply by November 1.
Veterans with a 70%+ disability rating: homestead exclusion
Ramsey County offers a property tax exclusion for the homestead of an honorably discharged veteran with a service-connected disability rating of 70% or higher; the amount depends on the disability percentage.
How: Apply with Ramsey County by Dec. 31.
Pick the smallest trash cart that fits$28.13 vs $35.02 every two months
Republic's 2026 rate for a 20-gallon cart picked up every other week is $28.13 every two months, against $35.02 for a 35-gallon cart picked up every week.
How: Contact Republic Services to switch your cart size.
Put trash on hold for long trips
Trash service and billing can be put on hold for vacations of three weeks or longer; the recycling fee on the water bill cannot be put on hold.
How: Contact Republic Services to set up a vacation hold.

How these numbers are made
- Water: Saint Paul Regional Water Services' 2026 rates for Maplewood (billed quarterly): the $26.91 quarterly base fee for meters under 1 inch plus the City of Maplewood's 7.0% water surcharge, divided by 3, plus the $2.43 quarterly state drinking water fee ($10.41 a month); per 100 cubic feet, the average of the $4.95 winter and $5.11 summer rates (six billing months each) with the 7.0% surcharge, plus the 30-cent water main replacement surcharge ($5.68). The page starts at 6 units a month, the typical household SPRWS used in its 2026 rate notice.
- Sewer: $4.59 per unit of water with the $25.74 quarterly residential minimum ($8.58 a month, which covers about 1.87 units a month). Homes are billed on first-quarter use and later quarters cannot be higher, so summer watering does not add sewer charges; this monthly model applies the rate to the use you enter. The single-family storm sewer charge (environmental utility fee, $30.68 a quarter) is added as a monthly utility fee.
- Garbage: Republic Services' 2026 rates, billed every other month and including taxes and fees, divided by 2, plus the $5.97 monthly recycling fee on the water bill. The page starts at the 35-gallon cart; the city does not say which size is most common.
- Property tax: Ramsey County's final 2026 payable rates for Maplewood tax districts 5725 and 5726 (ISD 622, Metro watershed; both 143.355831%), the area of 6,526 of the city's 7,887 single-family homesteads: county 50.117339%, city 50.479154%, schools 31.607172%, other 11.152166% (regional rail, county housing authority, Maplewood EDA, Metro Watershed District, Metropolitan Council, mosquito control) of tax capacity, plus 0.151872% of market value for school referendums. Tax capacity is 1.00% of taxable market value up to $500,000 and 1.25% above, so each rate is applied at 1.00% and one extra line adds 0.25% x 143.355831% on value above $500,000. For homesteads the homestead market value exclusion ($14,762 at the $353,200 median) comes off the tax-capacity parts only. At the median this gives about $5,388 a year, matching Ramsey County's 2026 tax on ISD 622 Maplewood homesteads valued at $353,200. Roseville-schools areas (ISD 623) pay 146.922277% to 147.167130% plus 0.222611%. The state general tax does not apply to homesteads.
- Tax-bill charges: Ramsey County parcel data shows nothing due for assessments on 6,365 of 7,887 Maplewood single-family homestead tax bills for 2026; the rest carry amounts that vary by parcel, so none is included.
- Electricity and gas: Xcel Energy. Electric: the $6.00 basic service charge without a Maplewood franchise fee (Xcel's rate book lists $3.00 with a 09/26/2024 expiration and no renewal was found), and per kWh the 2024 average Xcel Minnesota residential revenue (EIA: $1,473 million over 8,677 GWh) less the basic charge, 15.96 cents; that average includes seasonal rates, fuel and riders but predates later rate changes, including Xcel's 2025 interim and later final rates. Gas: Xcel's table of average monthly residential bills at the January 1, 2026 interim rates ($21 at 10 therms, $336 at 300 therms) gives $10.14 a month plus $1.0862 per therm, plus the $3.00 franchise fee. Typical use: about 588 kWh a month (EIA 2024, Xcel Minnesota) and 71 therms (Xcel's typical residential gas customer). Insurance: 2022 NAIC Minnesota average (HO-3; dated, premiums have likely changed since) until you enter your own. Sales tax is not included.

Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.
