How these numbers are made
- Water: City of Schertz FY 2026-27 residential rates for a 5/8 inch meter ($29.62 a month plus $3.65 to $7.43 per 1,000 gallons). The page starts at 9 CCF (about 6,700 gallons) because the city publishes no typical use. Some homes at the city's edges may be on another water supplier.
- Sewer: $17.71 a month plus $5.57 per 1,000 gallons. The city bills sewer on your November-January average water use and charges $13.37 per 1,000 above 12,000 gallons; the calculator uses your monthly use at $5.57 throughout, so heavy summer watering makes our sewer figure too high and very large winter use too low. Drainage: we use the $8.00 monthly residential fee on the city's Drainage Utility page. The city proposed raising it to $11.00 per living unit equivalent (public hearing October 13, 2026), and its FY 2026-27 fee schedule lists $11.00 per residence; if the $11.00 fee applies to your bill, drainage is $36 a year more than shown.
- Garbage: one residential rate of $19.93 a month from October 1, 2026, covering weekly trash, every-other-week recycling and brush/bulk, and household hazardous waste on request.
- Electricity: GVEC's residential rates are not published as a tariff on its site, so we use its sample residential bill (November 2025): $25.00 a month plus $0.085 generation and transmission and $0.023818 delivery per kWh (10.88 cents). The voluntary POWER UP contribution is left out. Parts of Schertz (mainly in Bexar County) are served by CPS Energy, and some by New Braunfels Utilities, at different rates. Typical use is EIA's 2024 Texas residential average (1,096 kWh). Gas: CenterPoint R-2099-U commodity charge plus the October 2026 South Texas gas cost, divided by 1.037 to convert Ccf to therms; tax and franchise fee adjustments are left out. Typical gas use is EIA's Texas residential average.
- Property tax: 2026 rates per $100 from the Guadalupe County Tax Assessor-Collector's 2026 rate list: City of Schertz 0.5296, Guadalupe County 0.2964, Lateral Road 0.0529 and Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD 1.1969. The school rate is above the district's voter-approval rate and goes to voters as Proposition A on November 3, 2026; if it fails the school rate is $1.0769, about $212 a year less on the district's average home. Exemptions: $140,000 school, Guadalupe County's 1% ($5,000 minimum, also on the Lateral Road) and the Lateral Road's extra $3,000 (from the appraisal district's 2025 exemption table). The City of Schertz has no general homestead exemption.
- These rates are for the Guadalupe County part of Schertz, where most of the city's property is. The Bexar County part pays Bexar County, the hospital district, Alamo Colleges, the river authority and flood fund instead, and may be in East Central ISD; the small Comal County part is in Comal ISD. Some newer areas may also be in a municipal utility or improvement district with its own tax. The starting value is the Census median (a market value); your appraised value may differ.

| Total | $11,521 | $12,323 | lower than 6 of the other 10 Texas cities we cover |
Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.
