How these numbers are made
  • Denton bills water, wastewater, storm drainage, garbage and electricity together on one city utility bill, so we calculate yours from the city's published rates and what you tell us.
  • Garbage (FY 2026-27, from Oct 1, 2026): $20.82 a month for a 65-gallon cart or $25.42 for the standard 95-gallon cart, recycling included.
  • Water (from Oct 1, 2026): $17.31 a month for a 3/4-inch meter plus $3.96, $4.25, $4.43, $7.91, $10.58 and $13.15 per 1,000 gallons in blocks at 5,000, 7,000, 15,000, 30,000 and 50,000 gallons. Wastewater: $16.39 a month plus $5.66 per 1,000 gallons of winter-average use (capped at 18,000 gallons); we use this month's water as a stand-in for the winter average. Storm drainage: $3.52 a month, the 1,001 to 2,000 sq ft impervious-surface block, chosen because the city's FY 2026-27 average-bill example uses 1,500 sq ft; larger properties pay up to $16.28.
  • Electricity: Denton Municipal Electric residential rate effective July 15, 2026: $8.80 a month; the first 600 kWh cost 12.94 cents (6.94 usage + 4.62 energy cost adjustment + 1.38 transmission) all year, and kWh above 600 cost 12.94 cents in summer (May-October) and 10.62 cents in winter (November-April), so we use the 11.78-cent average of the two for use above 600. Typical use: 1,000 kWh a month, the city's average-bill basis.
  • Gas: Atmos Energy Mid-Tex Rate R from Oct 1, 2026, $24.40 a month plus $1.03839 per ccf and Rider GCR gas cost of $0.85017 per ccf from Atmos's example bill, converted to therms (1.037 therms per ccf); typical use 40.7 ccf (42.2 therms) a month from that example. Franchise fee and tax riders (about 6.5%) are not included.
  • Property tax: 2026 adopted rates, City of Denton $0.548485, Denton County $0.183394 and Denton ISD $1.1528 per $100 (1.884679% in all), with the $140,000 school homestead exemption and the city's $5,000 minimum homestead exemption (0.5% of value is less than $5,000 below $1 million). Over-65 and disabled exemptions are tips, not applied. The starting value, $387,061, is Denton ISD's 2026 median-valued homestead ($247,061) plus the $140,000 exemption it is net of; it is district-wide, not city-only. Denton County has no hospital, college or flood district tax; parts of Denton are in other school districts, and some newer areas may have a MUD or PID.

Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.
