How these numbers are made
  • Corpus Christi bills water, wastewater, storm water, garbage and city gas together on one city utility bill, so we calculate those from the city's published rates and what you tell us.
  • Water (from Jan 1, 2026, inside city limits, 5/8" x 3/4" meter): $17.25 a month plus $0.75, $4.06, $7.11, $11.17 and $16.24 per 1,000 gallons in blocks at 2,000, 6,000, 15,000 and 25,000 gallons, with the $1.18 raw water charge added to every 1,000 gallons. Wastewater: $38.29 for the first 2,000 gallons plus $8.41 per 1,000 above (capped at 25,000 gallons); we model this as $21.47 plus $8.41 per 1,000 gallons on this month's water use, as a stand-in for your winter quarter average, so very low use is slightly under-counted. Storm water: $10.32 a month, the Tier 2 residential fee (3,000 to 4,500 sq ft of impervious surface), chosen because one Equivalent Residential Unit is 3,280 sq ft; Tier 1 is $7.74 and Tier 3 $18.06. Garbage: $25.73, the $17.76 one-family charge plus the five solid waste fees on the rate schedule. New water and wastewater rates start Jan 1, 2027 ($19.11 minimum, $3.06 to $13.77 blocks and a $1.95 raw water charge; wastewater $39.95 plus $8.48); the totals use the rates in effect now.
  • Electricity: Corpus Christi is in the ERCOT competitive market, where AEP Texas delivers power and you pick a retail plan, so there is no single tariff. We use the Texas average residential price for January to July 2026 from the EIA, 16.06 cents per kWh with no separate monthly charge (plans fold AEP Texas delivery charges into their prices), and EIA's 2024 Texas average of 1,096 kWh a month. Your plan's price may be higher or lower.
  • Gas: Corpus Christi Gas residential rate, $18.60 a month, nothing extra for the first 2 MCF and $2.25 per MCF above, plus the monthly purchased gas adjustment. The city does not publish the adjustment as a single number, so we estimate $7.11 per MCF from the gas fund's FY 2025-26 estimated purchased gas adjustment revenue ($23,076,397) divided by gas sold (3,246 MMCF); that average covers all customer classes. Converted to therms (1 MCF = 10.37 therms). Typical use, 32.1 therms a month, is the 2024 Texas residential average from the EIA (197,086 MMcf over 5,308,705 homes). Sales tax is not included.
  • Property tax: 2026 rates per $100, City of Corpus Christi $0.599774 (adopted Sept 8, 2026), Nueces County $0.299366 plus the Farm to Market Road tax $0.003340 (together $0.302706, adopted Sept 9, 2026), Corpus Christi ISD $0.9583 (set Aug 24, 2026, unchanged from 2025, as also shown on the appraisal district's 2026 certified totals), Del Mar College $0.275903 (order of Aug 25, 2026) and the Nueces County Hospital District $0.088501 (adopted Sept 9, 2026): 2.225% in all before exemptions. Exemptions: CCISD $140,000; city, county general and hospital district 20% of value with a $5,000 minimum ($55,670 at the $278,348 starting value); Del Mar College $5,000. We apply no exemption to the Farm to Market Road tax because our 2026 sources list exemptions only for the county as a whole; it is about $9 a year either way. The starting value is the 2026 average market value of homestead residences (Category A Only) in the city, from the appraisal district's certified totals; the 10% homestead cap can make your assessed value lower.
  • Parts of Corpus Christi are in Flour Bluff, Tuloso-Midway, Calallen or West Oso ISD instead of CCISD, and some areas are in a tax increment zone, the Downtown Management District or a public improvement district (such as Whitecap PID); those have other rates or added assessments not shown here. Insurance is the 2022 Texas statewide average (NAIC via Triple-I); coastal homes in Corpus Christi may also need separate windstorm coverage.
  • Nothing here is legal, tax or insurance advice.

Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.

Questions to ask your candidates

The fact: Corpus Christi's property tax rate is 2.23%, higher than 8 of the other 10 Texas cities we cover. The rate adds up every agency on the bill, not only the city.
