Ways to pay less

Nothing here applies to every house automatically. These are worth checking:

  • Homeowners 65+ or disabled: freeze your assessed valueValue frozen

If you qualify for the homestead credit and are 65 or older or disabled, the taxable assessed value of your home can be frozen at its value at the next assessment date after you turn 65 or become disabled. Your tax can still change if millage rates change.

How: Apply for the freeze with the county assessor's office.

  • Leaf vacuum pickup, Nov. 1 – Jan. 31

The City offers a leaf pickup service from November 1st through January 31st every year. Residents rake their leaves to the curbside and Public Works trucks vacuum them up.

How: Rake leaves to the curb, not into the gutter or street.

  • Trouble paying a utility bill? Ask CADC

Central Arkansas Water's service page points customers who need help paying a utility bill to the Central Arkansas Development Council (CADC).

How: Call CADC at 501.326.6229, the number on Central Arkansas Water's page.

  • Bulky items and brush are picked up weekly

Items too large for the cart are picked up weekly, the day after your household garbage, if separated into piles as the city lists. Since July 15, 2025 the city no longer picks up refrigerators, freezers or air conditioning units.

How: Follow the city's pile rules on its Public Works page.

How these numbers are made
  • Property tax: Arkansas assesses a home at 20% of market value and applies the total millage. For the 2025 taxes (payable 2026), a Sherwood home in the Pulaski County Special School District carries 52.1 mills: school 40.7, City of Sherwood 1.3 and Pulaski County 10.1. A Sherwood home in the North Little Rock School District pays 63.7 mills; we price the Pulaski County Special rate. We subtract the $600 homestead credit. The state report also lists voluntary millages that are not included.
  • Water: Sherwood is outside the Little Rock and North Little Rock city limits, so CAW's outside-city residential rates are used: $14.57 + $1.00 + $0.90 = $16.47 a month for a 5/8" meter, and $3.65 / $4.73 / $5.82 per CCF in three tiers. Larger meters cost more. CAW also lists a 4.25% franchise fee for water customers inside Sherwood and sales tax on water and sanitation; neither is included in the totals.
  • Sewer: Sherwood's 2026 inside-city rate of $7.47 per 100 CF is used with no separate monthly charge; the city's 400 CF minimum ($29.30) matters only for homes using under 4 CCF. Garbage: $23.49 a month, the city residential rate on Central Arkansas Water's sanitation page; whether recycling is included and whether sales tax is added is not stated there.
  • Electricity: Entergy Arkansas Schedule RS present rates from its 2026 rate case notice (a case still pending). Base energy is a year-round weighted average of the first 1,500 kWh block (4 summer months at $0.07392, 8 months at $0.06990). The formula rate plan rider (52.4369% of base revenue) and tax adjustment rider (-1.1760%) are applied to the customer charge and energy charge, and the per-kWh riders (CCR, ECR, EECR, FLCF, GGR, MISO) are added: $0.01795 net. Typical use is the EIA 2024 residential average for Entergy Arkansas. Entergy's franchise fees and sales tax are not included. FRP resets under the proposed rates.
  • Gas: Summit Utilities Arkansas's gas supply rate is not published in a public document, so gas is priced at Arkansas's 2025 average residential price from EIA, $19.25 per thousand cubic feet, which EIA defines as the total price paid; no separate monthly charge or franchise tax is added. Summit's tariff sets a $17.51 monthly customer charge plus distribution rates of $0.73831 per Ccf for the first 15 Ccf, before supply rates and riders. Insurance is Arkansas's 2022 statewide average premium.

Cities bill differently (some put trash on the tax bill, some cover more services), so a higher number isn't necessarily worse. The property tax rate is compared instead of dollars because house values differ.
