Ways to pay less

Nothing here applies to every house automatically. These are worth checking:

  • Homeowners 65+ or disabled: freeze your assessed valueValue frozen

If you qualify for the homestead credit and are 65 or older or disabled, the taxable assessed value of your home can be frozen at its value at the next assessment date after you turn 65 or become disabled. Your tax can still change if millage rates change.

How: Apply for the freeze with the county assessor's office.

  • Water leak adjustment

If a leak on your side of the house meter makes use exceed your average by at least 20,000 gallons, the City may adjust the bill: the first 5,000 gallons above average are billed at the standard rate, the next 10,000 at 50%, and the rest at the City's cost of water plus 5%. You need a plumber's invoice, or your own letter with the dates and location of the leak and an invoice for parts. Adjustments are limited to repairs made in the prior six months.

How: Give the City a plumbing company's invoice, or your letter with the leak and repair dates and a parts invoice.

  • Large item pickup, one item a week

Republic Services offers residential customers a large item pickup service, one item per week, such as couches, lamps, rugs and mattresses. Each item needs its own request, received by Friday at noon for next-week service.

    How: Email Bulk401@RepublicServices.com.

  • Extra recycling carts cost nothing

Additional residential recycling carts are $0.00 a month on the city rate sheet.

How: Call Utility Billing at 479-271-3100, option 2.

  • Drop off yard waste at the city compost facility

Grass clippings and other yard waste can't go in the trash cart. The City's composting facility at 2000 Northwest A Street takes yard waste from all residents; a weekly yard waste cart from Republic Services is $156.71 a year for the 2027 season.

How: Take yard waste to the composting facility at 2000 Northwest A Street.

  • Even out bills with Average Billing

After twelve bills, you can sign up for the City's Average Billing Program, which recalculates your average each month, so there is no annual settle-up.

How: Email the authorization form to egovutility@bentonvillear.com or drop it off at 1000 SW 14th St.

  • Help paying the utility bill

The City lists agencies and churches that provide utility assistance, including Arkansas 211, Arkansas LIHWAP, Helping Hands and the Salvation Army. Each may have its own eligibility rules, such as income or household size.

How: See the City's Utility Assistance page for phone numbers and websites.

How these numbers are made
  • Property tax: Arkansas assesses a home at 20% of market value and applies the total millage. For the 2025 taxes due Oct. 15, 2026, a home inside Bentonville in the Bentonville School District carries 62 mills: Bentonville School District 46.8, City of Bentonville 5.5 and Benton County 9.7, which includes 2.6 mills for NorthWest Arkansas Community College (only the Bentonville and Rogers school districts pay it), so we show the county as 7.1. The state report lists no separate library millage for Bentonville. On market value that is 1.24%, about $5,313 on the $428,500 Census median before the homestead credit. Parts of Bentonville in the Rogers School District pay 56.62 mills.
  • Homestead credit: Arkansas's homestead property tax credit takes up to $600 off the tax bill of an owner-occupied home (Act 330 of 2025, for assessment years from 2025); we subtract $600 from the tax. Lawmakers voted in April 2026 to raise it to $675 for later years; that is not included.
  • Water and sewer: City of Bentonville inside-city residential rates. Water (usage from Oct. 1, 2026): $15.42 facility charge plus the $0.40 Safe Water Fee, then $8.05, $8.75 and $11.75 per 1,000 gallons in the 0-4,000, 4,000-10,000 and over-10,000 gallon blocks. Sewer (bills from Jan. 1, 2026): $15.81 plus $9.07 per 1,000 gallons of water used. Homes outside city limits pay higher rates; those are not shown.
  • Garbage: the City's residential trash and recycling rate from Oct. 1, 2026, $18.31 a month for weekly service by Republic Services, billed on the city utility bill. The optional yard waste cart ($156.71 a year) is not included.
  • Electricity: City of Bentonville residential rate for bills from Jan. 1, 2026. Winter (November-April bills) is 9.002 cents and summer (May-October bills) 10.717 cents per kWh, so we use the 12-month average, 9.8595 cents, plus the $17.20 facilities charge, and multiply both by 1.05 for the 5% franchise fee shown as a separate line on the bill. The monthly Power Cost Adjustment (a pass-through of SWEPCO power cost changes) is not published as a current figure and is not included; EIA reports the City of Bentonville's 2024 residential average at 11.65 cents per kWh. Typical use is the City of Bentonville's 2024 residential average, 954 kWh a month (EIA).
  • Gas: Black Hills Energy Arkansas October 2026 residential rates, $15.51 a month plus $1.2078 per Ccf in delivery, cost of gas and riders (1.1647 per therm), both multiplied by 1.04 for Bentonville's 4% franchise tax listed in Black Hills' tariff; the winter weather normalization adjustment is not included. Typical use is Arkansas's 2024 average, 41.9 therms a month (EIA). Insurance is Arkansas's 2022 statewide average premium; sales tax on utility bills is not included.
