How these numbers are made
- Property tax: Kentucky 2025 rate book for Nelson County, Bardstown city and Bardstown Independent School district: city 16.1, county 18.52 (extension 1.0, fiscal court 11.8, library 5.2, soil conservation 0.52), state 10.6 and school 83.3 cents per $100, a total of 128.52 cents. The 2026 rates were not found. Part of the county has a Northeast Nelson fire district (10.0 cents); it is not added.
- Flat charges on the same tax bill from the rate book: a $60 Bardstown/Nelson County fire fee per improved parcel and a $24 911/dispatch fee per living unit; the rate book does not say they are yearly, but they are listed with the tax-year charges and counted once a year.
- Starting value is the Census median value of owner-occupied homes in Bardstown, $203,500; your PVA assessment may differ. The $49,100 homestead exemption is for owners 65+ or totally disabled, so it is a tip, not taken off the typical bill.
- Water and sewer: city rate pages (water from January 1, 2026; sewer adopted November 25, 2025). The sewer page's own typical 4,000-gallon bill ($38.04) does not match its table (30.47 + 2 x 6.94 = 44.35); the table rates are used. Typical use 4,000 gallons comes from that page.
- Electricity: the city's residential rate, $15.00 customer charge plus $0.0948 per kWh; no riders are listed on the city page. Starting use is EIA 2024 for Salt River Electric Cooperative in Kentucky, the cooperative based in Nelson County, because the city utility is not in the EIA table. The 3% schools utility tax is from the Kentucky Department of Education levy sheet. Gas: LG&E tariff rates (the $3.96 monthly gas line tracker charge in a pending filing is not added), as the city page says LG&E and KU serve the area; use is EIA's Kentucky average.
- Not checked: whether some Bardstown addresses are served by another electric provider, the insurance premium for Nelson County specifically, and city franchise fees.
