Ways to pay less
- Seniors 65+ with limited income: up to $50,000 off assessed value. Florida law provides an additional exemption of up to $50,000 off the assessed value for homeowners over 65 who are permanent Lake County residents with a homestead exemption and whose adjusted gross household income does not exceed $38,686. Lake County and the City of Minneola have authorized this exemption up to the full $50,000. How: Apply to the Lake County Property Appraiser during the application filing period of January 2 to March 1.
- $5,000 exemptions for widows and widowers and for totally and permanently disabled people. The widow/widower exemption and the disability exemption each reduce the assessed value by $5,000. How: Apply to the Lake County Property Appraiser by March 1; the widow/widower exemption needs a copy of the death certificate, the disability exemption Form DR-416 or a Social Security letter.
- Veterans with a service-connected disability: exemptions. Veterans who are Florida residents, were discharged under honorable conditions and have a service-connected disability of 10 percent or more can get $5,000 off the assessed value. Real estate owned and used as a homestead by a veteran who was honorably discharged with a service-connected total and permanent disability is exempt from taxation if the veteran is a permanent resident of Florida on January 1 of the year the exemption is claimed. How: Applicants must provide a letter from the U.S. Government or U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as proof.
- Pay your tax bill by November 30 for 4% off. The Lake County Tax Collector gives a 4% discount if paid in full by November 30, 3% by December 31, 2% by January 31 and 1% by February 28. How: Pay the Lake County Tax Collector; for mailed payments, the postmark sets the discount.
