How these numbers are made
  • Property tax: 2026 City of Marquette millage chart; with a Principal Residence Exemption the total is 39.6187 mills (37.3077 summer plus 2.3110 estimated winter), and without it 57.6187 mills because 18 school operating mills apply. The City adds a 1% administration fee on the taxes, entered as 0.3962 mills.
  • Taxable value: half of the Census (ACS 2020-2024) median owner-occupied home value of $274,700, $137,350. Michigan caps taxable value after the first year of ownership, so long-time owners are usually lower. Enter your own from your bill.
  • Water and sewer: City rates effective October 2026: water $13.47 base plus $11.40 per 1,000 gallons; sewer $13.63 base plus $17.66 per 1,000 gallons; the City's typical bill uses 5 units (1,000 gallons each). Stormwater is charged by lot size ($10.60 up to 1/5 acre, $18.02 over 1/5 up to 1 acre, $28.64 over 1 up to 2 acres, $54.57 over 2 up to 6 acres); the $18.02 charge the City uses in its typical bill is used here, so owners of smaller lots pay less and owners of larger lots pay more.
  • Trash: Cart A at $27.50 a month on the utility bill (Carts B to D cost $35.35, $29.65 and $39.65; the sheet does not give their sizes).
  • Electricity: Marquette Board of Light & Power residential rate, $17.00 plus 12.6 cents per kWh. Typical use 508 kWh a month from EIA 2024 (91,673 MWh over 15,036 residential customers). Gas: SEMCO Energy September 2026 residential rate, $0.374 cost of gas + $0.101 balance and demand + $0.28 billed distribution + $0.0041 per therm, plus $12.25, $1.70 and $1.56 monthly; typical use is the EIA Michigan residential average. Insurance: 2022 NAIC statewide average for Michigan, the latest year the Insurance Information Institute publishes; it is a statewide figure for 2022, not a Marquette or current-year quote. The electric rate is the one on the Board's page, in effect for bills issued after October 1, 2020; no later change was found. SEMCO's page does not state the billing unit of the three fixed items; they are treated as monthly.
  • Typical bill: the City's typical-bill example uses Cart A, 5 units and the $18.02 stormwater charge. Long-time owners usually have lower taxable values than the starting figure because taxable value is capped after year one. Form 2368 is the Michigan PRE affidavit. SEMCO Energy is the gas utility assumed for Marquette; the electric rate has no later change found.

Questions to ask your candidates

Each one starts from a number above. Any candidate can answer them.

1. Property tax rate

The fact: Marquette's property tax rate is 5.80%, higher than 310 of the other 314 cities we cover nationwide. The rate adds up every agency on the bill, not only the city.

Ask: "Property tax in Marquette is 5.80%, higher than 310 of the other 314 cities we cover nationwide. What should that money pay for first, and would you change anything about how it is set?"

2. Sewer and utility-bill fees

The fact: Sewer and flat utility-bill charges here come to about $1,439 a year, higher than 275 of the other 284 cities we cover nationwide. Some cities bill sewer on the property tax bill instead, which is not counted here.

Ask: "Sewer and flat utility-bill charges here cost about $1,439 a year, higher than 275 of the other 284 cities we cover nationwide. What drives that cost, and would you change anything?"

3. Electricity and gas

The fact: Electricity and gas for a typical house here cost about $1,784 a year, lower than 296 of the other 319 cities we cover nationwide. Rates are set mostly by the utility and the state.

Ask: "Electricity and gas here cost about $1,784 a year for a typical house, lower than 296 of the other 319 cities we cover nationwide. Which parts of that can the city influence, and what would you do about them?"
