Ways to pay less

Nothing here applies to every house automatically. These are worth checking:

  • Switch to the micro-cart, 12-gallon cartUp to $208 a year

Your cart costs $47 a month; the smallest costs $29. Worth it if you rarely fill it.

How: Putting more in your recycling and food waste carts may let you use a smaller garbage cart, which lowers your rate.

How these numbers are made
  • Property tax uses King County's 2026 levy code 0010 (Seattle) rates, 9.90845 per $1,000 of assessed value, on the Assessor's district median assessed value.
  • Water: 2026 Inside-Seattle base charge plus per-CCF rates; peak (May 16 - Sept. 15) and off-peak rates are blended by months (8 off-peak, 4 peak) and the 60-day tiers are halved to monthly.
  • Sewer is $20.18 per CCF of water use.
  • Drainage is the 2026 annual rate for a 4,500-5,499 sq. ft. parcel divided by 12. The lot size is an assumption about a typical lot; King County bills it on the property tax statement, not the utility bill.
  • Drainage is the 2026 annual rate for a 4,500-5,499 sq. ft. parcel divided by 12.
  • Electricity is City Light's flat rate: $0.3945 a day and $0.1338 per kWh, at 955 kWh a month, which is Washington's statewide average (not a Seattle figure); homes using less pay less. Gas is PSE's basic charge and energy charge for 64 therms from its March 2026 rate notice (bill effective May 1, 2026), divided by 64. Taxes and rider lines on utility bills are not included, and the sources checked do not say whether the published rates include the city utility tax.
  • Gas: PSE is the natural gas utility for Seattle; the checked sources only confirm PSE's King County service area and its rates.
  • Nothing here is legal, tax or insurance advice.
