Electricity: Appalachian Power

Schedule R.S. residential service, September 24, 2026: $7.96 basic service charge a month, plus generation, distribution and rider charges that total $0.16189 per kWh on the company's select-charges sheet, which does not include consumption taxes or utility tax. Roanoke's consumer utility tax on residential electricity is the greater of $0.00780 per kWh for the first 1,000 kWh plus $0.00450 per kWh above that, or 12% of the minimum monthly charge; Virginia's electricity consumption tax is $0.001595 per kWh up to 2,500 kWh a month.

Gas: Roanoke Gas

Residential service (RS) effective October 1, 2026: $17.00 monthly charge, $1.335830 per therm for the first 54 therms and $1.151888 per therm above 54. Roanoke's consumer utility tax on residential gas is the greater of $0.13 per CCF or 12% of the minimum monthly charge. Virginia's gas consumption tax is $0.0135 (state) and $0.004 (local) per CCF plus a special regulatory tax of up to $0.0026 per CCF. From October through May, for a home whose main space heating is gas and that the gas customer lives in, the city's consumer utility tax does not apply to the part of the monthly charge above $15.
