Source: The primary source is surface water from the Diascund Creek Reservoir, supplemented by the Chickahominy River.
Lead: Lead and copper testing was completed in 2025; none of the individual samples exceeded the action level, and lead has not been detected in treated water tested monthly at either treatment plant.
PFAS: In 2025 testing, PFOS ranged from 3.7 to 4.9 parts per trillion and PFOA from 2.1 to 3.3; the federal limit set in 2024 is 4.0 parts per trillion for each.
Hardness: Moderately hard: the 2025 average was 69 mg/L as calcium carbonate.

Sewer

City sewer, billed by Newport News Waterworks: a $5.00 monthly service fee for a 5/8-inch meter plus $3.37 per HCF of water used. HRSD wastewater treatment: $9.84 per 100 cubic feet from July 1, 2026 (minimum $0.45 a day for metered customers).

Ways to pay less

Leak credit on a high water bill. After you find and repair a leak on your side of the meter, Waterworks may credit up to 50% of the water and sewer consumption charges above your 12-month average use. How: Use the online form within 60 days of the high bill's original due date and include a plumber's invoice or a receipt for repair supplies.
