Newport News property tax: where it goes

A Newport News house pays 1.18% of its taxable value in property tax, plus flat charges on the same bill. For a house at $260,600 of market value, that's about $3,222 a year.

Tax is levied on assessed value, which Virginia law requires to be fair market value, taxed per $100 of assessed value.

A surviving spouse can qualify if the veteran died on or after January 1, 2011, the spouse has not remarried and still lives in the home. How: Complete and sign the application; the veteran must provide the original designated letter from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Questions: Commissioner of the Revenue, 757-926-8653.
  • Low income: help with the solid waste fee. A fee relief program, based on income and the number of people in the household, can cover a portion of the solid waste fee.
