Shreveport property tax: where it goes

A Shreveport house pays 1.565% of its taxable value in property tax. For a house at $178,900 of market value with the homestead exemption, that's about $1,838 a year.

Tax is levied on assessed value, which in Louisiana is 10% of fair market value for land and residential improvements, less exemptions, times the millage (a mill is 1/10 of 1 percent); the homestead exemption does not apply to City of Shreveport taxes.

Louisiana taxes are billed in the year they are assessed: 2026 bills go out in late November 2026. The Caddo Parish Assessor has not yet published its official 2026 tax-rate sheet, so the official 2025 rates are used.

Ways to pay less

  • Seniors 65+ with income under $100,000: freeze your assessed value. The senior freeze locks the assessed value of the homestead of owners 65 and older with less than $100,000 in adjusted gross income. It is lost if the property is transferred or improvements exceed 25% of the property's value. How: File the senior freeze form with the Caddo Parish Assessor (501 Texas Street, Room 102) and bring proof of last year's income.
  • Homeowners with a disability: yearly assessment freeze. Owners who are 100% disabled for Social Security, or veterans with a 50% service-related disability, with less than $100,000 in adjusted gross income can have the homestead's assessed value frozen. This freeze must be applied for each year. How: File the special form in person at the Caddo Parish Assessor's office each year.
