Ways to pay less

  • Homeowners' exemption: if you own and live in your home on January 1. If you own and occupy your home as your principal place of residence on January 1 (lien date), you may be eligible for a Homeowners' Exemption. This exemption reduces the taxable value of your property by $7,000, resulting in a tax savings of approximately $70 to $80 per year. How: See the Alameda County Assessor's exemptions page.
  • Seniors 65+: exemption from the Measure A parcel tax. To qualify for the senior exemption from the Hayward Unified Measure A parcel tax you must turn 65 and own and occupy your property as your primary residence. How: Apply through the district’s parcel tax administrator (see the Measure A page).
  • 100% disabled veterans: property tax exemption. The Disabled Veterans' Exemption reduces property tax on the principal residence of veterans rated 100% disabled because of a service-connected injury or disease (or paid at the 100% rate for unemployability). For the 2025-2026 assessment year the basic exemption amount is $175,298; a larger low-income exemption also exists. How: See the Alameda County Assessor's exemptions page.
