Ways to pay less

  • Seniors 65+ or permanently disabled, income $50,200 or less: real estate tax relief. If you own and live in your home in Lynchburg, are 65 or older or permanently disabled, have a yearly income of $50,200 or less and a net worth of $100,000 or less (not counting the fair market value of the home you live in), you may qualify for real estate tax relief. How: Applications are available each June and are due August 1; a new application is required every year.
  • Disabled veterans rated 100%: no real estate tax on your home. A veteran rated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs with a 100% service-connected, permanent and total disability may be exempt from real estate tax on the home they own and live in. A surviving spouse may also qualify if the veteran died after January 1, 2011, the spouse has not remarried and still lives there. How: Use the Disabled Veteran Real Estate Tax Exemption application; questions: 434-455-3870.
  • Renovating a house 50+ years old: 10-year rehabilitation tax exemption. For a residential structure 50 years old or more, work that increases the improvement value by 40% or more can earn an exemption equal to the increase in assessed value from the work. It does not freeze taxes; the exemption is reduced by 25% a year in the last three years of the program. How: File the application at the City Assessor's office before starting the work, with a $125 non-refundable fee; finish within two years and keep all taxes paid.
