Who runs Erie

A town manager appointed by the Town Council runs the town day to day. The seven-member council, the mayor and six members elected from three districts, sets policy and adopts the budget. The council also appoints the town attorney, municipal judge and town prosecutor. Meredyth Muth has served as acting town manager since Feb. 25, 2026, under an agreement that runs to Dec. 31, 2026.

Is Erie in the red?

Cities must pass a balanced budget, so "profit" and "deficit" mean something different here. The useful questions: does the city's everyday money (the general fund) cover its everyday costs, how much does it keep in savings compared with its own target, and how big are its pension and debt bills.

General fund, FY2026$75.5MOut of $394M across all city funds, which includes utilities and other money that can only be spent on one thing. Town of Erie
Savings shrank, FY2025 (audited)−$3.1MGeneral fund revenue $57.6M, spending $54.3M. General fund revenue exceeded spending by $3.3 million in 2025. After $9.0 million in transfers out, mainly to capital projects and the fleet fund, fund balance fell $3.1 million. Revenue fell 9.3% from 2024 as use tax and permit revenue dropped with a slower housing market. Town of Erie · Jun 29, 2026

The city's own outlook

The 2026 budget plans to use $6.2 million of general fund balance. Budgeted revenue rises 8.3% and spending 4.7%. The budget assumes general fund revenue grows 4.1% a year on average, and the town says it will conserve resources until its commercial base grows. Town of Erie · Jun 29, 2026

Savings against the city's own target

Unassigned general fund balance: $22.3M (2025-12-31). The city's own target: The town keeps a general fund reserve of at least 25% of budgeted operating expenditures, $17.4 million based on the 2025 budget. Amounts above that are moved to the capital improvement fund. The city meets this target. Town of Erie · Jun 29, 2026

Why we skip the "budgeted deficit": many cities plan to dip into savings, then spend less than planned. The audited result tells you what really happened.
